I PKOSPKKITV VS. PANIC. Prosperity Is the practical aim and object of life. It controls the thought and action of man In every walk of life whatever disturbs or threatens properlty Is evil, and what promotes and Increases prosperity Is good by the ethics of practical com mon sense unlnstructcd In technical knowledge. ' Belief, that the cause of cither prosperity or panic, originates In the administration of government Is In note in all sovereign citizens; be cause everj politician and statesman have made their reputation and pop uiarity by the principles and policies they advocate to maintain prosperity and prevent the recurrence of panics. I The disappearance of money from circulation whenever a panic occurs is a well known phenomenon that no statesman or philosopher has ever been able to remedy. AH commodi ties fluctuate in value with the changes in supply and demand; and money being the standard ot value in which all obligations are payable, it also fluctuates in value by the law of supply and demand the same as eggs or wheat. The quantity of gold coin in circulation (which is sole standard ot value) is so infintesimal in comparison with demand obliga tions that financiers in control of gold supply gauge money circulation as positively as steam pressure, creating or destroying prosperity at will. Value is so lnconsistantand the law governing It is so subtle that rea son Is Incapable of distinguishing whether a? change in value has taken place in the thing itself or in money. To all appearances the value of money never changes at all, as the dollar always remains a dollar, and wlhtout a knowledge of the princi ples of money a novice must believe that the value of money does not change, but nil fluctuations are changes In the value of the commo dities themselves. All eyes were rivltcd on the Chi cago convention, vainly hoping for wlso political action that will result In prosperity. Tho men who repre sent money power played a "sure thing" game, using tho delegates as their puppets. Tho bosses are not nlwuys able to control the puppets, but they are absolute and supreme no matter what action tho puppets may take. It is only a matter ot expedi ency whether they coerce a hostile ad ministration or cocrco the conven tions and put up candidates who will take orders to create and protect spe cial privilege; and as long as gold re mains the standard of vuluo tho money power is tho supreme and only authority that regulates tho de gree of prosperity or panic by tho regulation ot tho supply and demuud or money in circulation. No party or candidate has proposed to change tho money standard, there fore thero is no Issue regarding who will bo king. It only remains to bo decided whether tho money power will coorco both nominating conven tions or whether It will have to coerce the administration after it lias come into power. All political conventions have used the same methods to subvert the volco of tho peoplo, but tho power of might has been, exercised so flagrant ly this year that it shocks all fair minded men ami ought to put an olid to nominating conventions. Still that would not cure tho evil any more than alt the pallatlves proposed by tho progressives, and there is no possible relief except by destroying tiio money t power with scientific moiioy.i i j , i '" I E. h. McCMJRE. Jiedford, Juno 'i'i, ViVi, TERMINAL RATES FOR MEDFORD "rVpSW transcontinental rates that werit into elTeet Juno LN lo ns a result of recent decisions by the Interstate Comineive Oonnnission in the eases brought by theMeiU'ord Traffic bureau and ot hoi's, materially increase Mod ford's advantage as a distributing point and jobbing center. The first class ra,to is as follews: 59 Old Missouri River to Portland Missouri "River to Medford Chicago to Portland M of Chicago to Medford Now York to Portland New York to Medford The other classes and territory are in the same ratio. A rate of $0.97 could be secured formerlv but onlv bv re- imungai rortianu. wnucuoi union ousiness is oi looted in this reduction, the readjustment is a step toward equaliza tion ot rates, and a oarrymg out ot tho contentions ol the Traffic Bureau's program. The Baker, Oregon rates, both class and commodity went into effect 7uno lo. The New York-Baker first class rate is $3.00 as against $3.70 to Portland. The commodity rate to Baker range four per cent higher at Missouri river. about 9 per cent at Chicago and proportionately east of Chicago. The Portland class rates apply to all points be t ween Portland and Ashland. Baker has now attained the control of her jobbing territory as against Portland on all business from the east in car load quantities. Medford is working along the same lines, and the sun js settimr irol Over the interior a control long held through unjust discriminations in lavor ot the metropolis by the railroad, aided and abetted by the state railroad commission. A TRAVESTY ON DEMOCRACY. N the walls of the democratic national convention hall Vy at Baltimore hang the portraits of two great patriots Tiiomns delterson and Andrew Jackson. Among the delegates seeking to control the convention that these portraits look down upon are Thomas P. Ryan, "Wall street speculator, trust organizer and captain of big business, August and Perry Belmont, millionaire represen tatives of the Jtathsohilds, Delancy Nicoll, attornev for trusts, Clarence Maekey, owner of 'Postal Telegraph and Cable company, John R. McLean, millionaire newspaper prostitute of big business and these men are there for the pm'pose of controlling the convention. Under Andrew Jackson's portrait is the legend "Who never sold the truth to serve the hour.'J How manv of these trust magnates could their names? These financial crooks represent all tnat Thomas Jclierson and Andrew Jackson were not. It was big business of his day that Jackson fought and smashed. It was to rescue the nation from landed plutocracj that Jefferson expounded. - What a sorry satire upon the name of democrats to style these men democrats! They are the representatives of the money power that controls' the nation, dominate the republican party and seek to control the democratic party also. .Against this sinister power, Biwan is battling almost single-handed, backed by the good will of the rank and file. He is making the same fight at Baltimore that Roosevelt made at Chicago and against the same forces. If victory rests with the Ryan- element, the sun will have forever set on the Democratic party. IDENT A car owned by Dick Sllnger was badly wrecked, Chauffeur Oscar Lyons, II. A. Skinner and C. P. Ful ler had a narrow escape from death, as the result ot a second accident at tho Jackson boulevard crossing with in thd past two weeks. The men had tlmo to jump from tho car be fore tho engine ot train 15, south bound Monday afternoon struck its front wheels and dragged it across the pavement. Two weeks ago John Adklns, on a motorcycle was struck at tho samo crossing and badly in jured. Lyons and his party was going west on Jackson when tho accident occurred. In front of them was a car containing A. G. Fuller and Ed die Reddy. The first car saw the train approaching and stopped but Lyons started to cross, not seeing the train. Fuller shouted and Lyons reached for his emergency killing his engine just as tho ear reached the track. Tho men Jumped and an in stant later tho engine had struck tho machine. Tho demand for alarm bells or cross arms at crossings Is growing more insistent. This Is tho third severe accident at thhj crossing. BY MOB OF GEORGIANS PIFEIIUXBT, Q ,TU)iO ,25. A mob took Aim IJoston, u negro cook, from county officials who were guarding her and bunged tho woman from a tree today.
