READY FOR RACES FOURTH OF JULY Whllo automobile racing Is con Bldored tlio king of sports and holds tho record for drawing the largest, crowd.s, Hh future on tlio Pacific CoastYs not the brightest. This Is duo to tho fact that the nubile as a j wholo will not co-operate with tho promoters and como up to the box cf flco and pay tholr admission. ".Motor Ago" or a recent date make tho following commont along theso IlncH, and shows haw the Santa Monica Itoad Knee of this year came very near being called, off nt tho last minute: AlMitdonlng Santa Monlrn Track "Th'cro Is a strong possibility that' course, the Santa Monica will be nftcr four years of racing on this abandoned for several years at least nnd possibly for all times. The life or a road pacing course seems to be from four to six years. Santa Moni ca has had Hs fling, and as road rac ing Is not a biicccss from tho stand point of a private promoter, It will not be easy to find men who will take tho risk. The Los Angeles Healers' Associa tion handled the race last year, but this spring A. M. Young took entire charge as a prlvato promoter. His plans nnd contracts were well made, and with permission to charge every person who crossed tho br'dge Into tho inside of the course, ho had pros pects of making money, but at the last minuto the city otlcials of Santa Monica refused to permit a charge at the brldgo and anoro than 50,000 passed over without payment. At the Inst minuto the race was al most called off. Manager Young said ho would abandon the meet if this source of revenue was cut off. This was at midnight of the day of the race and Young retired for a few hours' sleep with the understand ing that his plans would stand. When he came to the course In the morning all the fences had been re moved and crowds were pouring in. He was permitted to charge for ad mission to the grand stand, but fifty times as many people saw the race around the course." Driving Club Expense , Tho Medford Driving Club has gone to a great expense In perfect-. lng.tno norse tracK ana in uunuing the mile and a half n'uto track. The time and expense that the horsemen have been put to in working out and conditioning their horses is quite an Item. To get an auto ready for a race means an outlay of money not to bo scoffed at, to say nothing of tho time taken to do this work. Th day that tho manufacturer catno to tho rescue and stood the burden of all this is past. The tiro manufac turers, while at war with one anoth er, just at present still bold to the iron clad agreement against giving away tires and equipping racing cars. Tho purses offered are not largo enough to let tho winners break much better than even. However sovcral of tho boys are busy over hauling and getting their cars ready and promiso to do their best. It is tho ambition of tho commit tco to present tho best card that has ever been offered to this part of the stato, and if the public will do their share tho matter of bringing some celebrities here this fall is easy. 1 i'iiiiHWlfii i WmmMm ; i jtsvir HEAVY OFFERING J PUBLIC ifffi IN f c32.-eseu jx. jiEMssuisxr Detroit society received n surprise a few days ago wucu invitations to the wedding of Miss Carrol 11 Newberry and Captain V.
