Oregon, under the net of March 3. 1870. ABUSES OF THE REFERENDUM. "'33K I'iiv council in its wisdom has failed a .special election, to vote unon three proposed amendments to iho city charter, ono to slap at the newspapers hy out ting down the city printing, one to create a police judge, and one to prohibit all boxing contests. The first amendment, which might properly be termed five cent legislation, was discussed yesterday. The plea Of economy made to vent spite npon newspapers who were charging legal rates, what? is paid in other cities, ana not graiung, is specious, as me mwi iiiiiiMuituriu creates another officer for the taxpayers to support with only a few minutes' work a day, costing far more than the'aniount saved, a permanent expense to the taxpayer. As for the third amendment, it is unimportant and absurd and indicates an utter lack of backbone among councilmen seeking to evade their duty. The charter, as it is, gives the council ample power to regulate boxing con tests. If the councilmen think boxing should he sup pressed, all it has to do is to pass an ordinance forbid ding it. -I. But the councilmen are evidently afraid to go on rec ord, lest tiiey offend somebody, and so. like Pontius Pilate, wash theiAands of the affair by putting it up to the people.' - So the taxpayers' money is used in a special election, to gratify spite, to create an unnecessary city official and to permit councilmen to dodge a duty. Under a salaried city council, Medford is ' evidently drifting into the triviality of village ways. Ashland re cently made itself the laughing stock of the state by a special election to decide whether moving picture shows could remain open Sundays, and Medford gets into the same class by a special election .to determine whether or not there shall be boxing contests abuses of the referen dum that verge on the edge of comic opera absurdities. Of the council and its infinite wisdom, one can only repeat Jeb: - '.No doubt ye are tiie people,-and wisdom snail cue witn you FINDS TIES AMONG COMMITTEE -MEN .j County Clerk Coleman has com pleted tho final count regarding county committee men on tho repub lican ticket and. findsNa number of les and several nominees who do not live In tho precinct for which they we to elected.
