OAKLAND, Oil., .March 28. Ex changing n volley of shots in the cha pel of the First Congrogiitional church here us a elinmx of n Lt years' feud, former Mayor Roland W .Snow i.f Oakland and Adolph Goldman, ex convict and former Oakland crockery merchant, nre both dead bore, each liv fhe other's 'hand. The gunplay began after Goldman had slashed Snow severely with a razor. Goldman was shot in the fore head and killed instantly. Snow died at the Oakland Receiving hospit il cnrlv today. lit 190 1 Goldmniv was sentenced to four years in Sim Quetitin for shoot ing and seriously wounding Snow. Only Two VItneses. The tragedy occurred just as the church members had bogun to assem ble for evening prayer service. The only witnesses were C. S. Lewis, jani tor of the church and Mrs. F. Cussidy a member of the congregation. Snow had taken a seat on the aisle in the rear of tho chapel when suddenly Goldman, who, it is said, had em ployed a detective to trail the former mayor to the church, entered and sat down across the aisle. Goldman engaged Snow in conver sation, and suddenly slashed out with a razor, almost .severing Snow's chin. Snow fled up the church aisle, fol lowed by a. volley from. Goldman's re volver. While Lewis was endeavor ing to get nt Goldman, Snow sudden ly turned and came toward his antag onist, moaning nnd swaying, with his arms crossed in front of his face. Goldman fired two moie shots and then Snow straightened up, whipped out a revolver and tired twice. One bullet struck Goldman squarely in the forehead, killing him instantly. The other penetrated his lungs. Snow Falls Unconscious. Snow thon staggered out through the door and fell unconscious on the cliurch lawn. U was rushed to the receiving hospital, where it was found he had a bullet in his jaw nnd another in his right hip. After suffering iiiiuiy hours, he succumbed earlv o day. The double tragedy marks the close of a remarkable feud which grew out of what at first was a warm friend ship. F.arly in !!)()( Goldman came from New York and entered the crockery business. He and Snow, who was then mayor of Oakland, be came last friends. Snow furnished the niorchaiit with letters of recom meiidutiou and passports for a trip to the Orient and upon his return i it lUOlt Goldman at once visited the mayor and warmly thanked him, uuil from that time dated an attachment for the mayor which almost bordered on imiuia. Former (Srcat Friends. Whenever Snow changed liis resi dence Goldman changed his in order to bo near him. He continually sought the mayor, and finally his attentions boeaino so annoying that Snow w.is obliged to seek assistance from the police to he rid of his would-be friend. It is said that one time Goldman nursed Snow through a long illness. In September, 1 ))();), the men hud their first quarrel, in wl'cli Goldman was worsted in a list fight. Two mouths later Goldman brought suit for criminal libel agaiuat Snow but the case was dBtnissed. In June, 11)01, Goldman shot and seriously wounded Snow, charging that Snow's daughter had nliumitod hor father's affoctions from him. For this he sorved four years in Sun Oiientin. PORTLAND.
