Iliuu's nUtnut were tnry ami euro tor of the Oregon 1th torienl society, has left for the north after n week spout in this eonnt,. where he litis been doitu; some hiv- torieul nenreh. SovernI letters nod documents of eoti-idomWe liisIone.il interest were obtained by him. Among other things, lie secured mi mitogrunh letter written by Millnrd Fillmore to United States Attorney llolltrook, who was the first official to fill the position in Oregon. Tim letter was dated 1S.V2 nnd wns se cured from the grandson of the ori iiinl recipient, ITolbrook Withiugtun. It concerned legi.lntie matters and n large part of it whs devoted to the "serni" which was rugiiig nt that time over the propo.-.od ehaiige of the territorial capital from Oregon City to Salem. Another letter, written by the not ed .stutesmun-onitor. Edward Kverett of Boston, to n John . William of Salem, Muss., was secured by Mr. llimes while in Medford. While not relating directly to Oregon, the letter is interesting historically oii.tioeonnt of its age. It is dated Ootober 21, 1S'.T, and was written by Kverett in re-pon-e to nn invitation by a cadet eompnn to deliver nn address on the occhmoh of the anniversary of that orgnniwi tion. The wriler regrets that he forced to decline and exnro-.se the following sentiment: "The memorv nnd example of our forefathers, it we wish the heritage of liberty re ceived from them to endure, must be cherished, nnd we mu-t revere the principles by which it was achieved and (no institutions, envd and mili tary, by which it has been preserved." At the time that this lelter was written there were neither postage stamps nor envelopes in existence. The letter paper is of ordinary size an dw in folder form. It is ruled on three side, with the outside left plain for nnme and address. The letter had been folded nnd fastened with sening wax. Postage from Bos ton to Salem nt that tuno was 0 cents, nnd the amount was paid b the recipient of the letlcr. The word "paid" wns stamped in its face with n wodden stamp. The ink is ns clear as when it wns written. Tn addition to these rslics, Mr. Mines secured the document appoint ing Mr. ITolbrook district nttoruey for Oregon. The document bear rec ommendations from the governor of twelve states, and is cnMiter-ngned by President Zaehary Taylor. Persons familiar with the whole matler declare thnt nt the recent con vention of the American Banker-,' as sociation in Now Orleans tiis wn talked over, nnd nt that time it was agreed by tho group of California bunkers tluit it would bo n good thing to get n plea, even if John J. McNu mara had to be turned loose. These men knew thnt Fredericks linu been approached by emissaries of the de fen so weeks ago, nnd the offer innde to trade Jim for John J. It wus uiggohted' thai tho deal might lie put through. Brllwry a Feature. Wlion they got back hero, however, they found that the district nttoruey had discovered that two of his per manent jurors might linve been bribed. They also found that an ef fort wus in progress to have the cuko Hettled, and that Lincoln Rteffons, working for some one whose identity lias bo far not been revenled(, had impressed eertnin of tho lending busi ness men here with the fact thnt it would remove much apprehension re garding Los Angeles outside if leni ency were shown in the MeNamura ease, nnd it was openly proclaimed Unit hereafter the "golden rule" was to prevail, Steffins and Fredericks lake direct issue on what followed. Kteffens says ho gained his point, uhilo Fred cricks says the point was that John J. MoNiimurn was to be turned loose. and thnt he frustrated the plans. Tho conflicting claims have result ed in a misty controversy which inuv havo its effect on the outcome of the bribery case, Fredericks, however, insists that there would never have been nny plea of guilty in the chho of John J, McNninnru if lie had riot de veloped the origami bribery case and then clinched it with the Lonkwopd developments.
