The city cast her vote against the proposition, it is true, but not in nny desire to act as a fly on the wheel of progress, neither out of jealousy nor ill-feeling towards any other section of the count. Ashland has been and still is oneof the most conservative communities in the county and as such doubted the wis dom o -voting such a huge block of bonds for this purpose at a single time. Now that the county by an almost overwhelming majority, has decided in favor of the proposition, it is as surcd that Ashland will assist to the very best of her ability in getting the most 'satisfactory results possible. No doubt about it, it's going to prove a splendid advertisement for Jack son county, and the judicious ex penditure of the .$1,500,000 should provide a magnificent system of roads. Emphntic assurances have been given by the county court that no partiality whatever in the dis tribution of the money will bo shown. Abhlnnd relies on these assurance, and believes they will bo made good. Abhlnnd is not looking through any blue classes. What is, is best, and the county court can look for the hearty co-operation of this city and vicinity in the tremendous task which they have thus taken upon themselves of investing a million and J n half dollnrs in good roads for Jackson county. CIVIC WORKER TO ADDRESS LADIES jPifB. There will bo a special meet- inrr of the Greater Hertford club Monday, Oct. Dth, nt 3 o'clock, in the Guild hall of St. Mark's "" building. "" Special bubiness will be trans- acted after which Miss Clark of " Chicago, who has been actively pngaged in social and civic work "" will give n brief talk. "" -;- - discussion of rate-making tion it is stated. "Lt was contended that the interstate commerce commission probably would find it impossible to allow rates on this basis for a number of reasons." No such contention was made nor was there any such discus sion. ' r 'J.Mflmft AVhat has the Interstate Commerce Commission to do with railroad rates within the state of Oregon? Nothing. Commissioner Lauo in a recent hearing at Portland shut off all discussion of Oregon state rates with the re mark: ""We have no control over state rates." The Interstate Commerce Commission in the Spokane rate case discarded physical valuation as a basis of rate making for the present until such time as the government itself ascertains the valuation uniformly. The Oregoninu announces that the purpose of the league is to "secure a postage stamp rate on all railroads in Oregon." A "postage stamp" rate is the same rate for all terri tory regardless of distance. The demand of the league is for a uniform rate for equal mileage on the same class of rail roads, different classes of railroads taking different rates, but no point in the state to have a different rate for the same service. The Oregoniau's statement is a malicious perversion of the truth. The direful results predicted for Medford is the de struction of the fruit industry. Medford's fruit goes cast and the rates thereon are under control of the Interstate Commerce Commission, which has just passed judgment upon east-bound fruit rates from Califronia, and has pro tected the fruit growers in that state. The Interstate Commerce Commission lias also passed its judgment on west bound rates to the interior, of which Medford and Hood River are a part, and held that the interior is to be protected from the monopoly so long held by coast cities. The Interstate Commerce Commission is not biased in its judgment, and will properly safeguard the rights of all. . If the Oiegonian had told the truth, instead of pervert ing the facts, in order to prejudice the public against the People's Equitable Patq League it would have set forth the following simple facts: The league did not discuss actual rates at all. The league did not adopt any policy for the adjustment of rates. i "" -1fnPi The league simply organized and vested full authority in a board of five directors to formulate a policy of proced ure that declared against preferential rates, but said noth ing about the rate to be charged. The directors of the Equitable Rate League arc all prominent and successful business men, whose acumen and business judgment arc beyond the vision of the Oregoniai) and "the rate experts" who confound the unbiased judg ment and known attitude of the Interstate Commerce Com mission with a serpentine twisting of the law and the evas ion thereof by the Railroad Commission of Oregon, whose acts are to increase Portland's advantages over the interior and to den' on some untenable pretext, the interior equal lates when prayed for.
