NOTICE. G. A, It. and V. R. C: Train Iouvcb for AHUlntul Tuesday morning at 8:ifi. 8!i ATTENTION is eallod to tho editorial in tho Portland Telegram written by Editor John J Carroll, iv printod elsewhere, as containing food for refloetion. iMosI of what Mr. Carroll says is true, though wo aro not, such lottiu'o-oators as ho makes out. Until tho bulk of our ooinntoroinl orchards conic into bearing, Medford cannot be called self-supporting, and tho balance of trade will be largely against us. This is a'noee, ssnry condition in every young fruit dis trict. Time, labor and capital are necessary to grow the orchard, and that is ono of the reasons why bearing or chards are valued so lughlw California and evoyv other favored fruit region has gone through the same experience. It may be a tempo rarily undesirable condition, but it cannot bo called un natural or unhealthy. The fruit of this section will be in future veal's ono of Oregon's greatest assets and will bring into the state more money than any other industry. Mr. Carroll's remarks, however, can apply to the en tire stute. The balance of trade is against Oregon the state docs not produce as much as it consumes. Very lit tle, except lumber, is shipped out of the state. Nearly everything wo wear or "use and tho bulk of what we eat is shipped in. In tho stage of development Oregon is in at present this is as necessary a condition with the state as a whole as it is with Medford us a city. We cannot hopeto produce all that we consume. "Wo have, however, proved that in this district we can produce what all the world wants to buy and wo are striving to produce it. During tho few yours necessary to establish any industry, the balance of trade will bo against us. "When established, the tide turns. Mr. Carroll leaves the' impression that the withdrawal of S0,000 acres from fanning for orchards has resulted in changing the balance of trade. This acreage is but a small percentage of the available acreage. There are still half u million acres farmed. But whv farm for a few dollars an acre return, when you can get ten times tho return and Jf0r lab then some at fruit raising t In the good old do-nothing days that Mr. Carroll talks about Jackson county had about a quarter of its present population. We did not have the home market that wo have now. We did not realize that wo grow perfect fruit: that our climate was an asset: that we had greater natural resources than any similar section of the county. We vegetated. Now we have awakened. Wo are doing some thing, and in the doing setting tho pace for Oregon. In the building, we have been so busy that we have lost sisfht of the small essentials. We have planned for the future at the expense of the present. We have neg lected truck gardening, cuttle, hogs and alfalfa. We have passed over dairying and the more modest occupations. We ought to raise most of what we eat. We will shortly. It has been overlooked that is all. money needed to tfuppiy us ti'0uo with food, At it ulmico it will lie noon thai tho cmulititm Is not coo iioiuioallv healthy. Ohvioiitfly, niton, tlon should n'llunsly ho dhootoil to raising loenlly tho rvqimvu' food sup ply nnd t-hippini: out protluots iustoml of shipping them in. Tlioro is no hotter' market anywhere, Iherefovo, it would seem no hot lor opportunity for Ihe market gnnU'iior, truck far mor nml cuttle miser could ho nf- fonled. During Ihe Mi) gold excitement in California some of tho imm who knew trades turned from tho feverish excitement of gold hunting to steady employment at their trades. Tluv wore paid as high as $20 a day, and in tho end came out uhoitt as well us their fellows. An analogous situation is presented at .Medford. " - CITY NOTICES. A Few Reflections About Medford (Portland Telegram.) There is no place in Oregon which attractive to satisfy the craving of so impresses one as being n minia ture city as does Medford. It has, tho air and style nnd it has the sort of people to back it. Its orchards, broad in expanse and beautifully kept, its artistic suburban homes, everything except its country roads, which arc bad, give the impression of wealth and culture with the high est possible average of proupcrity, such as it is next to imKSbibIc to get elsewhere The surface of things presents a true picture and yet it is not entirely true. The prices of land have go.ie up steadily nnd what it has produced has largely justified it. The attrac tions have bought largely and who are who have bought largely nnd who are able to wait for the results which are slower in coming than is generally MipjH)scd. So long as men of this class get and inuintnfn the orchards the problem in u great measure set tles itself. About 80,000 acres aro now set out to orchards in the Medford section. In 10 j'ears from now they will prob ably be producing 20,000 carloads -f fruit, gay about ono carload to every four acres. This should be within bounds to mnke allowance for av erage crops, for inferior care of or chards, and some of this is notice able even at Medford, and for infer, ior nnd barren trees which cnnnol bo provided ugninst. Such n showing would mcun an annual income of about $10,000,000, u sum sufficiently nil ysection. Uut when these 80,000 acres wr re set to fruit, chielly tipples nnd pears, many of them were withdrawn from other productive purines. For in stances, the neighborhood UM-d to ship out about 350 carloads of hogs a year, now it brings in practically nil the bacon and hog products that it consumes. It used to ship out Hour and wheat; now three-fourths of the flour it ucs is imorted. It used to raise nnd ship to outside mnrkets train loads of cattle, now it raises few cattle and ships in nearly all the beef and sheep products it require for its substinencc. It is an ideal soil for the raising of onions, but it raises very little if any more than it needs for local consumption. Last ycur it shipped in f0 carloads of -tatoes from the Willamette valley; it is n grent potato country, but it doesn't produce half that is required for local consumption. It used to be n great alfalfa section and a great rog raising section nnd many of the acres thus used produced as great revenue as they can ordinarily be ex pected to produco when planted o fruit. Indeed, so utterly does Med ford rely upon the outside world for what it cats that last year it spent $7000 for lettuce which t-nino from other places. It is now very largely a waiting game for tho enormous ncrcnge of fruit to como into bearing. Besides this Medford sends outside tho BCSOI.UTI01T. lie It roolcd liy ttio city council of tho city of Mrtlfortl, t)ri-Kfi5 That It Ih lb Intention of tin council to lay a 4-Inch wutrr mnln on Viincnuvrr nvfiiuf from Mnln xtri'ot to Klnventti Mrret unit to u". the cost thereof upon tin- property frontliiK on until portion of wihl Mtn-ct In proportion to tlu frimlrtKo J or n.iiii property Tim council will mf-flt at tho council cliiitnlicr lit tho city hull In siilil city on the Slh day of July, 1911, t 7:n p. m , nt which tlmo nil proU-ntu iiriiImhI the laying of "itlil utcr main on H.-ilil por tion of mIiI, lrct nml thrt imvioudcnt of tho co.st thereof uion tho property front InK thereon "lit lio luuril.
