Similar discoveries will follow the development of countless prospects in this section. Mining has been held bade in this region by lack of expert knowledge, lack of capital, lack of enterprise, lack f transportation. J3ut little real development work has been done, and most mines have yielded more than invest ed in development work. The placer mines have yielded many millions of gold. Thev continue to produce. But the ledges from which this jold came, have never been, except, in a few instances, either located Or worked. Yet, most of the hillsides carry color. JOLTS AND JINGLES By Ad -Brown Good evening, have your Panama canal bonds arrived yet?. I'm KoInK to bo rich this fall. , 'How's that? Think of tho money I will sao by not going to the coronation. f Speaking of crowns and corona tions that's one on George. the Greenback and other mines. They would have creat ed stampedes in any other section of the world but not in unemotional Oregon. Much of the work that has been done utmn miniiur prospects has been of the wrong kind misdirected energy, due to ignorance. As a consequence, it has injured, rath er than helped the industry. Most of the development done upon properties has been upon copper deposits or upon arsenical iron and other ores requiring smelting and hence transportation. Great mines like the Blue Ledge and the Monumental, have many thousand tons of rich ore awaiting transportation, which, sooner or later, will be supplied. But there are hundreds of free milling ledges await ing but the touch of the right man to become wealth pro ducer's and the time is ripe to launch a movement to call the attention of the mining world to Southern Oregon the time, the place and the man must be brought to gether. Thanks to the energy of the Medford Commercial Club and the co-operation of the government authorities and the county court, a much better road is offered the tour ist from Medford than ever before. s Superintendent Arrant is going over all of the roads in the Crater Lake National Park and will have them in first class condition bv Julv 1. The United States Forestry Bureau is remaking the road through the Cascade Forest Reserve and promises a much improved highwav before travel begins. The Pumice hill grade has been replaced by one of the best roads in the comity, built by public subscription joint ly with the county. Jackson county is overhauling and rebuilding tnany sections of the highway. A new road from Derby with a steel bridge across the Rogue Avill shoijten the distance and furnish a new route. Still another short cut is being built a highway across the desert to a new steel bridge across the Rogue at the Jackson place. jn'om ueing an exceedingly nam trip to tne kikc, tne journey has become an easy days run by auto. Each suc ceeding year will see further improvements and gradually as the roads improve, the number of sightseers will in crease. ' Subscriptions to the Crater Lake highway fund are now due and should be paid to the Medford National bank, at once, in order that the underwriters may be re funded the money advanced.
