It Is admitted In party circles here that the real opposition of tho demo crats to the Brlstow amendment was not shown by tho final vote on the resolution. Thnt this opposition, however will not extend to killing the resolution In conference, but will be shitted to the state legislatures, Is said to bo tho party plan. Since it requires a vote of three fourths of tho stato leg islatures to ratify, should tho twolvo states of the "solid south" fall to en dorso on tho ground thnt It would mean federal Interference with tho laws governing tho enfranchisement of ho negroe, this number In Itself would be one more than enough to prevent the amendment from becom ing effective. Asserting his belief that tho resolu tion for the direct election of United States senators would bo ratified by the stato legislatures. Senator Borah (republican, Idaho) father of tho resolution expressed his pieasuro to day over Its passing. "Personally," ho said, "I would havo much preferred to seo the direct election of senators resolution adopt ed as, It came from the Judiciary com mittee, but It Is exceedingly gratify ing that the measure passed as It did. I think thnt If It reaches the states they will ratify it. I bollovo tho hatl flcatlon would have been moro cer tain If the resolution had been adopt ed In its original form. I feel, how ever, that It was a great victory and that all ought to bo satisfied." Borah sharply opposed tho Brlstow amendment, which was adopted. Prospect Fine. Senator Brlstow (republican, Kan sas father of the amendment, anado the following statement: "The prospect Is now fine. Tho direct election of senators resolution, as the senate adopted It, I bolleve, la certain to be approved by three fourths of tho states within a year or two. It presents the simple ques tion of whether senators should bo elected by tho people, and therefore is much stronger than tho original reso lution, which provided a chango In the constitution depriving tho govern ment of tho right to control senator ial elections. I fthat resolution had been adopted, it would havo precipi tated a bitter political controversy ov er sectionalism and tho negro qncs tlon all over the country. I think tho house will adopt tho resolution as It passed the senntc." Look for tho ad that describes the place you would like to own. Hasklns for Health.
