First Train Greeted With Bon Fires Great Benefits Would Accrue to This! CENTRAL POINT ITEMS. and Great Cheering Trip is Made Throughout Without Incident Road Bed Being Repaired. mid (By Judge S. S. Pontz.) BUTTE PAULS, Or., April An event of great importance general interest was the arrival of the first passenger train from Med ford to Butte Tails on Saturday, the first day of April. This has been a long and anxiously awaited event and when the train reached our town about 9 p. in. of Saturday It was greeted by blazing conflros, firing of guns, cheering of many voices nnd an enthusiastic throng of people, who warmly welcomed the arrival of the initial train. There were about 20 passengers aboard besides n good load of local freight, and household goods of the strangers coming to re side among us. The trip from Eagle Point was made without accident, or serious drawbacks, under tho careful management of the train crew. The roadbed Is being rapidly put in or der nnd within a short time it will be a most delightful plensuro trip for our valley friends, and wo an ticipate a large influx of visitors and settlers from the present on, nnd Hint our town will take on much more of bordering on civilization and general interests will bo very much advanced. We will, for tho present, hnve one train from Butte Fulls each day and will bo enabled to leavo here at 7 n. in., reaching Mcdford at 10 a. m., and can return at 0:45 p. m giving ample time to mnke daily trip and attend to business and reach homo tho same day. Wo feel that we are no longer Isolated from environments calculated .to Introduce moral senti ments nnd bring us Into close busi ness relations with tho outside world. None but thoso who have lived in this section nnd experienced tho dis advantages of our Isolation nnd our being deprived of communication nnd tho Inconveniences we have suffered therefrom can have tho faintest idea of tho extreme deprivations this com munity and section has undergone for years, and it is with gladsome- nesB that wo hear tho snort of the iron horse, the rumbling of tho cars and seo tho well filled coaches as they arrive in town. Too much praise cannot be given Manager Gerig for the earnest dili gence which he hns shown to bring his steed to this point, and tho nc tivo nnd continuous efforts of the officers and men who havo worked with him in accomplishing a feat that will long stand out in the history of Jackson county, and particularly the Butte Falls section, as one of no lit tle moment. Sunday, April 9, there will bo a grand excursion which, wo think nnd expect, will bring ninny Medford and valley people to our town. Thero Is room hero for every kind of business, but thero must bo more of a spirit of encouragement and push given to tho establishment of these enterprises nnd less of a selfish, grasping disposition shown to " any efrort made for tho upbuilding and improvement of our community and we must take broad, hopeful views of tho future. Tho time has now como for Butte Falls to take on city airs and to ban ish nil Influences nnd suppress all tendencies which are Ukoly to be hurtful to the progress and growth of tho community nnd impress the outside world that wo aro something moro than a "mill" town nnd that our Ideas and sentiments aro such us Invito peoplo of standing and Influ ence to come and mako tholr homos nnd follow tholr businesses with the promlso that they will moot with such welcome nnd find such sur roundings as conduce to tho well raising of a family and tho enjoy ment of a peaceful, healthful section, whoro the most refreshing waters are abundant, the fishing good, tho air dolightful and tho days not swelter ingly warm nnd tho nights bring swoot repose to tired nature. It is now fit that "incorporation" should come; that poaco, law and ordor be Introduced and every Inducement glv on to hojoum among us, for It will bo but a few short years bofore Butte Falls will bo among tho most thriv ing towns In Jackson county. Lot us all pull together and stiivo to redeem the paat. Part of State if Good Commercial Thoroughfare Were Maintained Across the Mountains. A movement Is on foot, supported by tho Ashland Commercial club and by all residents on tho old stage road fetween Ashland and Klamath Falls. to improve the road this summer nnd make of It a first-class thoroughfare petween tho Kogue Kiver valley and central Oregon. The matter will be brought before the Commercial club by C. W. DeCarlow, representing the residents on tho road, and assurances aro given that favorable action will bo tnken. Tho county will bo asked for an appropriation of $5000. Those who nre agitating In favor of tho appropriation for the Improve ment declare that it will bo a great advantago to this country nnd partic ularly to Ashland, for the reason that It will bo tho imain, and In fact the only improved road from hero to the Klamath country. For some time lit tle or nothing has been done to maintain the road in good condition. It has been fnirly good in the sum mer, but during the winter months all travel out of that country has been almost impossible. It is pointed out that tho mainten ance of tho road In good condition the year round will bring n great deal of tourist travel into tho Hoguo Uiv er vnlley. At present motorists pre fer to trnvel from northern Califor nia into the Klamath country nnd from thero north through central Oregon but it Is said that with a good thoroughfaro across tho Cas cade range hundreds of tourists would bo brought into tho Itoguo Itlv er valley every year. One-half of the Shako road lies In Klamath county and this has already been Improved. It is estimated that ?5000, If appropriated by Jackson county, will bring the portion of the road lying In this county to good repair. TO CUIUS A COLD IX ONE DAY Tako LAXATIVE BROMO "Quinine Tablets.
