aOUDFOUD KAIL TRIBUNE, MEDTTORD, OREGON, MONDAY, APRIL 3, 1011. PAGE SEVEN PEAR CHOP IN IS GONE Thrips Wipes Out California Pears Damaging Inroaqs Made on Plumes and PrunesCherries Alone Seem to Have Escaped. SACRAMENTO, ' April 3. That coiulltlons In the Delta lands nrc far more serious thnn nt first expected Is the report made today by JO. E. nrenmer, aBslstnnt secretary of the Btate hoard of horticulture, after making an Investigation as to the damage being done by thrips. Bretn ner declares that In some orchards the pear crop is ruined and that in thii entire district around Court land and on Grand Island not more than half a crop of pears can be expected. Besides pears, the thrips have made damaging inroads oh plums and prunes but, strange as it may scorn, cherries arc comparatively untouch ed by the destructive insects. This is the worst damago ever re ported in this section from thrips and from the investigation just made, and which will bo continued by the state commission, the thrlpsVr'c spreading throughout the fruit districts, taking a wider raugo and coming up the riv er Vapidly. Examination of the cherry trees closed that thrips do not thrive on them excopt In very rare cases, hut the penr orchards have been practi cally swept clear. All varieties of tho fruit have suffered, the Bartletts suf fering tho worst. Professor P. J. O'Gnra states that no 'true pear thrips havo made their appearance In this valley. The loss of the California crop means high prices for Rogue River pears this season. HORSE MARKET IS VERY ACTIVE PORTLAND, April 3. Uoeeipts for the week have been 1(152 cattle. 13.i calves, 1091 hogs, 0088 sheep The cattle market was 25 cents higher, (the sheep marlav was 15 cents to 25 cents higher. The hog market was steady to lower and horses and mules sold nt good prices. One four horse team brought $1, 775.00. These were shipped out from Chicago. There is an attractive demand for good horses and fanners i ntlio Pacific Northwest can add to their incomo by preparing to take care of that demand. Some of today's store nds probably show you where you can get it. at about the price you expect to pay, or less. Hasklna for Health.
