Written especially for the Med ford Mail Tribune. (Copyright, 1011, by Medford Printing Company.) T BURIAL TENTH INSTALLMENT. The Iron Sulphide Spray. The Iron sulphide spray, which la a recent development In the control of npplo mlldow and other mlldows, Is, hb it name indicates, a compound of sulphur and Iron. As has been stated before, when commercial llinc Hiilphur solution is added to a solu tion of Iron sulphate (FeSOl), or copperas, as It Is commonly called, the black ferrous sulphide is precipi tated, and sinto llmo-sulphur solu tion Is composed chiefly of polysul phldes of calcium, there Is, thcre foro, as a result of the combination, an excess of sulphur, which Is thrown down In the roatlon. Doth the free sulphur and the Iron sulphide are in a very finely divided flocculent form, and the precipitated sulphur undoubt edly adds much to thu fungicidal properties of the mixture. If tho stock llmo-sulphur solution has a concentration of 32 degrees Deaumo (specific gravity 1.207), It will require about 0.2.12 gallons to precipitate one pound of pure iron sulphate. In round numbers, and to insure a slight excess of tho lime sulphur solution, we may use rt quart of 512 degree Deaumii test llme-sul-plutr solution for each pound of iron sulphato to he precipitated. Of course, If tho density of tho llme-sul- the lime-sulphur solution has been washed out. Tho black muck so pre pared should bo diluted up to 100 ?allons for spraying. This spray, It Is o bo understood, is. to bo used while 'he trees are In full leaf, henco the Tare taken In wnshlng out tlic llmo Milphur solution which has been in excess. Oood results may be outnln- 3d by using this spray at half Urength; and since tobacco extract or lead arsenate may have to be usod it the same time, they may ho added to It without fear of Injurious uf fecls from the combination. If apple trees havo been badly mil dewed during the previous year. which may be seen by noting the pe culiar stubby, whitish terminal growths and tho unhealthy appear- nni'o of the fruit spurs, It may bo necessary to use the iron sulphide spray In combination with the regu lar lime-sulphur solution In the dor mant spray, or without It, Just be fore the buds open In tho spring. In tills case, no washing will ho neces sary and tho spray may be made up as follews: Partly fill a 100-gallon tank and add the regular amount of llnio-sulphur solution for the spring spray for scale, woolly aphis and green apple aphis, and to this add lfi quarts more of commercial lime sulphur solution, Then add 15 pounds of dissolved Iron sulphnto NEXT MOW ; Funeral of the Late P.
