i-'r'-"TSSSmf!" ?,' -"ir .- MEDFORD MAIL TRTBTJNE, MEDFORD, OREGON. TUESDAY. JANUARY 17, 1911.. '" '"w 'VTyqwwo aVs ' S EGGS, BUTTER AND POULTRY THE DROP ClircAGO, Jan. 17. The nctloti of New Jersey federal pure food inspec tors in destroying an Inunenso sup ply of "cold storage eggs" on the ground that thoy were unfit for hu man consumption, is. believed o be responsible for ' nri unprecedented drop here today in the prices of but ter, eggs and .poultry. United States District Attorney Sims has instructed Inspectors hero to Investigate food products held In cold storage and his action, following tho New- Jersey raids, is believed to pressago seizures throughout the country. Alarmed by tho activity of ( the United Stales government , official, tho food trust is reported to be in a panicky condition and to have thrown on tho market more than 5, 000,000 worth of tho cold storage stuff. This is indicated by tho fact that while fresh eggs remain hore worth CO conts per dozen, storage eggs are' only 29 cents and tho deal ers declare that if tho supply un loaded by the trust continues to grow In volume the pricofor tho "pre served" eggs .will fall still lower.. Recent reports by fedoral Inspectors hero declared that a great part of tho eggs, fowl and egg preparations hold in storago wero' "rotton, putrid and unfit for human use, containing ptomaines and other actlvo poisons in largo quantities." It Is reported that'in order to dis pose of tho largo quantities of eggs and fowl on hand tho food trust is dealing their stock out in the smaller towns throughout the country, thus evading federal inspection.
