In addi tion to the banner placed above the exhibit, thero will be postal cards and other features of advertising used in connection with this dcsjjjny. This calls for $250 in cash, together with a na tional apple show, gold medal bnnner; tho second prizo being .$100 ensh and silver medal banner. These arc merely mentioned i:. order to emphn sizo the possibility of thus conununity winning not only the sweepstnke but also tho first prizo on an exclusive Newtown displny. It is planned to ship tho Ashnland car Wednesday of this week, so as to have it on hand promptly and avoid tho danger of delay. Tho car from tliis vicinity will be of Yellow Newtowns, exclusively and it will bo entered ns coming from the "Ashlnnd districts the Kogno river valley," circumstance which should settle tho question of its being siM"i2o Ashlnnd exhibit. Further more, a streamer 80 feet long and tieo feet ido will bo lettered to this effect and placed over tho exhibit in order that "ho who runs may read," and ho well posted as to where the apples enmo from. The packers engaged in sorting up this carload from tho Helms or chard have been W. E. Tho packing is of n uniform stylo throughout, but ith threo classifica tions 108. 112 and 120 specimens to tho box. Tho top row is not wrapped this year, thus allowing ovcry box ensily nvailablo for exhi bition purposes. A spccinl arrange ment of boxing, however, permits the fruit to bo surounded with pnrcr lining, also a layer of cotton between cover and apples -prevents bruising. A cur.- . spondent of tho Journal has inloi- viewed n largo number of farmers and business men rosldlng in tho Cal- apoola, Oakland, Sutherlln and adja cent precincts, and the expressions from these people Indicate that West for governor nnd Smith for congress will receive a good majority of tho votes cast for theso offices in this section; In fact, nt presont It looks very much llko tho normal 400 re publican majotity in Douglas county will bo wiped out and most of tho democratic candidates elected. The sentiment In favor of Reed for Joint ropresontatlvo from Jackson and Douglas counties, ngalnst Duchnnan, tho assembly nominee, Is very strong, nnd It Is freely predicted that tho lat ter will bo dofeatod. J. K. Howard, tho democratic nomlnoo for represen tative from this county, has a good chanco of election, and several dem ocratic county officials will no doubt bo elected. For threo days Snn Francisco will make these sovoral hutirod promi nent westerners her guests, nnd the occasion will end in n mostcr ban nuct,. nt tho conclusion of which a speech or two will bo inntlo express ing tho sense of the gathering. It may bo decided to lot tho stntcs work out thoir problems separately, ns ha been done in tho past; perhaps the congress will go on record ns the father of n now western union n solid west that, will work as one when striving for benefits tho weM beliove it should hnve. At nny rate sovoral issues that hnve been ngitnting the west for u generation will bo fought out.
