Mr. Stover is well known in the government service. His latest bul letin, No. 226, on "Irrigation Exper iments and Investigations in West ern Oregon," by the department of agriculture, has created much inter est and favorable comment and has called attention to the vast-import-ancc of irrigation in both the Wil lamette and Rogue River valleys. Mr. Stover has for a number of years been engnged in government irrigation work, and for the last three 3ears has been in charge of the department work in Oregon. Much of the irrigation work now go ing forward and several of the large enterprises in the state have been the direct result of the exhaustive investigations and favorable reports made by him. It was through his practical tests thot the vast benefit of irrigation was so successfully demonstrated in the Willamette val ley, and it was also largely through his efforts that irrigation in the Wil lamette is being applied. His bul letin shows that the monthly rainfall of July and August in that section is less than one-half inch, which is far below the necessary amount needed for perfect plant develop ment. Where irrigation was applied crop production was increased from GO to 200 per cent, showing without question the benefit derived and the necessity of irrigation in the Wil lamette, Umpqua and Rogue River valleys. . The Rogue River Valley Canal company is congratulating itself up on securing the services of Mr. Sto ver and the company has certainly added a very important man to its splendid organization.
