For the sake of political advan tage these political buzzards cheerfully befoul their own nest. To such extent have these papers influenced some peo ple that they can only speak of the primary election laws and direct legislation in language too foul for publication. And, after all is said, why? Is it because tho voters of Oregon have individually been given more power than the voter of any other state in the Union? Formerly men fought for much less rights, and plains were dyed with the blood of heroes for privileges of much less importance than those guaranteed to the citizens of this state. For much less, nations have given tho lives of the pop ulace to tho fire and sword and and their existence. How strange it is in the light of the history of the vote to meet men who under the old system could never hope to be even delegate to a precinct convention decry and deride a system that for the first time in their lives gives them representation in their party and in their state. Poor, blind moles, they seem, who for so long have trudged in the darkness of political machinations that io light of real political and civil power seems to daze them into unbelief of their political regeneration. It is not dif ficult to understand why the ruling interests who pro ' it by favorable laws, which give them power to levy tribute upon the people, should oppose making laws by popular vote, but it passes human understanding to explain why the yoemen of the state should be willing to sacrifice the rights that mean their uplifting and regeneration. But such there are. To behold them, to contemplate them, is to doubt their sanity; lack they the self-preservation instinct of the dumb brute, that feeds on hay and grass. Therein lies the secret of the slowness of civilization. The mental traits of the people are so ingrained with su perstition, of conventions and party, that they dare not assert their faith in themselves. But in Oregon thank heaven such are in a hopeless I minority. If Oregon should yield to this selfish, corrupt minority, and to the bray of the golden ass that libels her in every bray, she might be well called the fool of the family. But not while the Pacific rolls upon her shores will her people surrender the privileges she has guaran teed to every voter of her state to pass upon laws that gov- j em him and making him in truth the governor, as well as the governed. TACKSTROM, Proprietor, Successor to Montgomery's. WORSHIP OF THE GREAT GOD. WORSHIP of the great god, Business, has been car ried to an absurdity in America. For business, we stunt ourselves, and dwarf our careers, or narrow our out look and our lives. Existence has been made a chase after dollars and by the most unworthy of standards, that of acquisitiveness, we measure success. Our days are given to grasping pen nies and all the things worth while are forgotten in the frantic scramble. In the eyes of the money mad, life becomes strangely distorted. Humanity becomes something to be worked, in&lead of worked for. It is not how much you can do for the world, but how much you can do it for. At the apex of our civilization stands the multi-millionaire, piling up his useless accumulation of unneeded wealth and striving to extort still more from humanity. His endowment of hospitals, libraries and universities is not charity, for charity is love, and love and millions are the opposite poles. With great wealth goes great poverty. So much wealth is produced in the world, and when the wealth is absorbed by the few, the others must suffer. The millionaire views all things from a commercial viewpoint. .The railroad becomes something to coin mon ey instead of a public convenience. The oil fields become a resource to extort a constantly increasing revenue from the masses instead of bettering their condition. The false ideals and false standards of the worship of the golden calf permeate all walks of life. Great wealth means added care and added responsi bility. It is about as foolish an aim as could be pursued. It is the source of debauchery of the national life, the fountain head of graft and the mainspring of corruption. Its influence is felt in the demoralization of church and state. And, after all, it does nothing worth while, for only those things that make for the betterment of humanity are worth while. It is a libel 011 the name of Christianity to call America a Christian nation. No barbarous heathen nation of an tiquity ever had ideals as far removed from those taught by Christ as money mad America. The gospel of self reigns triumphant and tramples underfoot the gospel of the meek and lowly Nazarone. DIED. CALHOUN In Phoenix, Friday, August 5. 1910, Mrs. Kr.to L.
