Some years ago Keen recognized in -"Damon and Pythias," which was written nearly a century ago by John Banlm, an Irish poet, a play which, after proper reconstruction, could be made Into one of the strongest com binations of dramatic action, specta ular effects and powerful morals, and after months of careful "tryouts," the present version, stripped of cum bersome repititlon and with many of the original lines transposed, was made. Pythias has been made the dominant character, since it was he who made a sacrifice that has gone down in history. The following fine notice is from the San Francisco Bullltln: Last evening a fine preformance of the never old "Damon and Pythias" was indroduced at the Valencia thea tre, under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias. Phillip Keene playse "Pythias" and proved that he Is worthy to carry the great name of Keene upon the stage. He made a fine impression up on the Kinghts and their ladles. In voice and physique he is admirably suited for the ldollstsic youth. The cast, headed by Miss Laura Keen, give Mr. Keene good support and the performance was all around good. Scenery accessories showed that the stage managen.ent had left nothing undone and did it well. The play is of especial interest to members of the Knights of Pythias, and tho gollowlng letter fgom H. Schaffner, Grand Keeper of Seals ot interests to members of that erder: "It was my pleasuro on April 28, last, to witness rendition ot the play 'Damon and Pythias' by your compa ny. "I regret that more of tho mem bers of our order could not avail themselves of the opportunity to see the play, slnco it would 'rnvo been beneficial in its results to tbem, as givlug a bioador view of tho lessons tought by our order, and especially that of tho basic prlnclplo friend ship.
