So fur us tho commercial supply of apples east of tho Kooky mountains is concerned, tliiit in 1010 will be foiinil mostly in lliu older middle and Nuw England HtatoH. For some weeks it has been a foregone con clusion that tlio apple crop of tlio central west anil southwest shows ilumagu beyond repair. Within the past few days this jour nal has completed n very exhaustive inquiry into orchard conditions as they existed at the close of May. This was at a date practically u month after tho sorious and surpris ing freeze in western orchards, thus unabling growers to more closely do- I tormina the real situation. - Fully confirming earlier advices, 1 oitIiiii'iIIhIh now show by their latest luporlH, oareiullv Mimmnming the present situation, a very uneven con dition of things. Tho outlook for apples is very poor in Illinois, Mis souri, Wisconsin mid furthor west, Irregular and spotted in the south west. In Ohio orchards suffered much dmiiugo by reason of the frosts. Honoris from Michigan are quite irregular, and that great state promises to turn off more apples than at first blush scorned possible. East and southeast of the terri tory mentioned orchards practically escaped damage through spring frostH. This is true of Pennsylvania, Mnrylnnd, the Virginias, etc., and of even more imporjanco unite true of nearly all of the loading apple coun ties of New York. In Now Huglnnd mid such Can adian apple states as Ontario, Quo hoc and Nova Scotia tho season has proved a rathor sluggish mid back ward one, after all, retarding fruit bloom, but now bringing about u general run of reports looking to ward full blossom and good sot of fruit. In this connection it is not mniss to revert momentarily to tho fact that two or thrco seasons of drouth have covered a large part of the older htatus all the way from Pennsylvania and Ohio to Nova Sco tia, mid we get homo complaint of impoxcrished conditions of trees as to root development, etc. Based on tho known conditions of earlier vicissitudes in the set of fruit and the general environment of indifferent glowing weather up to the opening of June, it may thus bo said that prospects are for a normal to good applo crop in the east, thence ranging nil tho way downward to n practical failure in parts of tho southwest. The prospects of Mich igan uie uneven, luuuing from next to nothing to fairly good reports. MEDFORD MARKETS. (Prices paid by Medford merchants.)
