THE granting of a franchise in Ashland for an intoi'iiv ban trolley line is of as great importance to the valley as it is to Ashland itself. No electric lino in any of the cities of the valley would pay for many veal's. In fact such n franchise would be valueless except as a basis for holding up some interurban line in the future. An electric line in the Rogue River valley must depend upon its freight business for profit. This business can only be secured by an interurban line, and every town in the valley must be served to make it profitable. It will be somo years yet before even an interurban line would be profitable in this valley. There must be a great increase in the bearing orchard area to furnish the necessary tonnage as well as a greater development be fore returns would be received justifying the investment. A counter proposition is talked of in Ashland for an electric line to Klamath Palls. The promoters talk of a 30-year franchise, Ashland to take over the interests in 15 years if wanted, and the line to be built up to the summit of Mt. Ashland. Such a proposition is absurd on the face of it, for cap urn win jjuu uiiuiv oiiuu i vjaiuiiiii-jv uiiiuiijiajsu. j.1; la ujji-j fonj. ohonp. rent that the sole object is to head off the Allen franchise! 34 non!g( 3 miles from 'Medford, un- in the interest of the Southern Pacific. Ashland franchise is granted. He states that the interur ban line is already financed he is amply able to build it himself if he wants to and he estimates the investment at several millions and has financed a $5,000,000 companv for the purpose. fr.' Allen promised the building and extension of the Pacific & Eastern, and the line is being built. People did not care what interests were behind him as long as it was built. The same with the trolley line so long as it is built, people are indifferent as to who furnishes the money. The conditions in the franchise asked for at Ashland are the same granted at Medford and Grants Pass the same granted by Portland and by "Willamette valley towns for the Oregon electric. 2To subsidy, no favors are asked yet the people in most places are willing to grant sub sidies to secure such an investment. It is up to the people of Ashland to say whether or not the Rogue River valley will have an interurban line and the people of the valley think Ashland progressive enough to see the advantages of such a line, both to Ash land and the valley, and confidently expect she will not block the enterprise. PAPERS ON FRUIT PESTS. Today the Mail Tribune publishes the final installment of Professor O'Gara's article on blight. It is the most complete article on the subject ever written and is most valuable to every orchardist. Every orchardist in the valley should take the Mail Tribune, because it prints articles that are invaluable to him and worth thousands of dollars. He cannot afford to be without it. The Mail Tribune is printing in pamphlet form this treatise on blight, written especially for it. It will be mailed to any subscriber on receipt of postage or can be had on request at the office. But you must be an old or new subscriber to the paper to secure it. Tomorrow the Mail Tribune begins" the publication of a series of articles on "Pear Thrips," a disease that is struggling for a foothold in the valley and must be vigor ously fought to keep in subjection. The articles are writ ten by Dudley Moulton, investigator of the United States department of agriculture, and form the most complete and authoratitive treatise on the subject yet issued. u 5000 E ACRES OF TIMBER Dwlnnell Company, a Minneapolis Concern, Buys Large Tract on Elk Creek Wfth View to Beginning Op erations on Large Scale.
