P. J. O'OAHA. CHICAGO, III., May 9. Although .Senator William Lorltner declares bo has no Intention of roHnlng, It Is thought jioHHlblc that he will tem porarily relinquish bin seat and do maaid that tho senate appoint a com mittee to Investigate H fjlection. Thin action Is predicted In polllcal circles hero following the Indictments returned by the Cook county, Jlllnols, grand Jury canned by the allegations of state representative Charles A. White that bo had been paid to voto for Lorlmer. Tho grand Jury at Springfield to day Is Investigating tho Lorlmer elec tion, beginning tho second week of tho present month. Other indlct aaents, It Is Intimated, win bo re turned In Chicago. The whole affair has caused bo much talk and no toriety, It Is declared, that Lorlmor Is considering asking the senate to begin nn Investigation of Its own In order that he may be vindicated. Washington dispatches received hero have repeatedly Intimated that Lorlmer would resign. Although tho senator has refused to discuss tho charges of brlbory In connection with bis election, further than to deny them and to declare he would not resign, It Is known that ho has been greatly worried over the affair and desires that tho case ni?y he thor oughly Investigated. Ileports received from Washington say that n nuiaaber of senatorial con ferences have boon held regarding the Lorlmer ninttor. The senators, It Is declared, have been considering the advisability of forcing Lorlaner to re sign and seel: vindication before re suming bis duties in the cenate. The friends of the Bonator here in timate that as a coanpromiso tho Chi cago senator rnoy retire from actlvo duties pending the present Investi gation and secure investigation by tho senntc as well. There Is much speculation hero as to who would 1)0 named should Lorl mer bo forced out. It Is gonorally believed that Governor Deneon favors former Senator Hopkins, defeated for re-election at tho last leglslnttarc on the grotand that tho people of Illi nois nominated Hopkins at the pri maries held before tho senatorial elec tion. Denceu was a staunch sup porter of Hopkins and rofUHod to be come a candidate for tho senato him self, although a rged to do so by way of compromise during the long dead locked session of the legislature that finally elected Iorlmer.
