Sir Er Bst Slmokeltou, recently knighted for reaching "furthcrest south," is conducting a tour of discovery in V tlT!L T.l.. 01 1 W.. his wife, the former lieutenant is via Hing the places of interest in the eastern city. Ho arrived oa tho Lu sitania. Almost the first words he uttered $r interviews given tho press were in praiso of Colonel Theodoro Roose velt. Asked if ho thought Roosevelt vould reach the south polo if he keaded an expedition in search of it, he replied quickly that ho did. "Ho is a man of strong determin ation and strong to do it." Sir Er wet believes that Captain Henry Seott, who is to head the next Eng Xsh expedition in search of tho south pole, will find it. He says Scott will follow tho same rouio that he fol lowed, which will take him within 100 miles of tho pole, and that from tic re he will mako the rest of tho journey. He intimated that he might head another expedition himself seeae time, and said that if he made the trip ho would reach the pole. Shackelton praised Peary, saying! that he firmly believed Peary reach ed tho north pole. He refused to comment on tho claims of Dr. Cook. j NORTH TALENT TALES. Mr. and Mrs. George Hover have been in Grants Pass for several days having a specialist treating their son for throat trouble. The community in and around Phoenix was grieved to hear of the aeath of Professor J. S. Davis, tho vocalist, who taught a large class in both Phoenix and Hertford last win ter. Many will remember his sweet songs. He died of blood poisoning at the home of friends near Eugene, Or. 3rr. Davis has relatives in Can ada, brothers and sisters, to mourn his demise. He was a true Christian and died rejoicing m the' faith. The bazaar given by the ladies of tho Christian Aid society netted them about $88, after all expenses were paid. Besides, there is still about 80 handkerchiefs unsold. Much credit is due those who had the af fair in charge, and tho liberal pat- ronago of all was appreciated. The jury found tho difference in value between the Yakima fund and the Oregon timber to be $1400 and unve a verdict for that amount. This tho trial court reduced to, $1000, and undor tho treble provision of the law entered judgment for $3000, which has novj been affirmed by the state supreme court.
