Cnl., Fob. 23. ; District Attorney Firkort is work- J ing today upon n mysterious- series of cryptograms, bearing upon the ! Kraft cases,- which havo been sub- 1 mittcd to him by Patrick Calhoun, indicted head of the United Rail roads, with a request that they be carefully investigated. The orypto pums were printed in n San Fran cisco morning paper under the head ing of "porsnnn! advertisements," ' between May 23, 100S, and August 4, 1909. Willimn R. Stone, a watch- I maker of Oakland, noticed the ad-' vertiscments and worked out a key By using only the first letter of each word. Tn this way he found that the messages dealt with the graft cases and included the names of; Calhotw, the prospective jurors nnd( other persons prominent in the cases ; thnt the investigations showed the , advertisements were presented to the "Los Angeles papers and were , telegraphed here the night before ' publication. Amman, who made the arrangements, sent the nds to the 1 office by special delivery letters, i which were usually posted at the1 Main postoffice in Lo Angeles. ' Stone followed the messages closely nnd at length submitted them, io Patrick Ca'liun, who in turn sub-1 aitted them to the district nttornev. It is asserted that some ofiSlhe mes- snjres referred to threatsJgagainst Calhoun nnd others apparently re fer to the death of Chief of oPlieo 3'ggyi who was lost in the bay. wh he is supposed to have fallen off Hip police launch. It is averted that some of them refer to the dynamit ing ontrages and other thrilling fea- tares of the prosecutions, It is stated today that the paper n which the advertisements appeared nbm&ted them to Detective 'Wil liam J. Burns nnd former District .Attorney Langdon of the prosecu tion, nnd that after going over them Sums declared that they were the work of someone connected with the iefense. There were 40 of the cryptograms jn all. The following which ap peared July 29, 1909, is an example: "Accounts muddled. Inventory not very essential. Some thing in demnit3T good. All the items not given. Have instructed stockhold ers defer every action till hearing." Translation: "Am investigating his eath." The body of S. P. Flynn, historian of the graft prosecution, who is said to have had ranch valuable infor mation regarding the cases, was fonnd hanging from a pair of clothes hooks in his room in San Jose on July 20, 1909.
