THE MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, MONDAY, JANUARY 10, 1910. NEAR BURGLARY WEARY'S PUCE Two Yeggs Force Way Into a Sa loon and Mako Attack on Safe, But Are Frttfitanti Away. TLo ealoon of Downing & Slinger h Front street was entered from the rear Sunday evening and an attempt made to crack tho safe. That they did not succeed is due to tho fact that Charles Steele, the night bartender, had a sick son and bad gone to tho saloon about 10:30 to get a bottlo of mineral water for tho boy. As ho camo to tho frout door ho noticed that tho blinds were trwn and no light visible, something enusual, as tho shades are always arc open when the saloon is closed and a light left burning in front. Tho idea of burglary that early in tho evening never entered his head. He thought it was simply neglect on someone's part. As ho put his key in the door, how ever, ha heard two men start for tho back door and by tho time ho suc ceeded in opening tho door tho fel lows had escaped in tho darkness of the alley, taking their tools with them. lhey bad entered through a rear window by prying tho top sash down and had then oponed the back door to giv9 them an a venae of escape. That titer 1um& atfeeM the eafa && probably bad tbe proper tests km shewn by tbe f aet that tbe ban He was badly sprung and bent, in dicating a strong presesr. Nothing was missing except a few cigars and a bottle of whisky. A hand ax evidently taken from someone's wood pilo was fodl 1 the back door, bnt nothing else in tbe way of tools. " .
