u THE MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOR1), OR1WON. STNDAV, )KCKM UKU f. 11)0!). oao ooo PEOPLE'S PULPIT... Scrrnon by CHARLES T. RUSSELL Putor Brooklyn Tabernacle. -Ooo Sunday, November 21. Pastor Hus noil, of Brooklyn Tabernacle, preached today to a crowded house from the above text. He said : No other book treats the matter of human woe and sorrow In the wise, tender, sympathetic, helpful manner of the tttble. It assures us that however cold, heartless and disappointing the world may be and our frleuds may be. or those from whom we may have ex pected better things, we have, never theless, a God of sympathy a Hod of love. No heathen religion knows any thing of such a God. With them God's attributes are merely more" or less of ferocity. Their pods are to be placat ed mid worshipped from fear of what they otherwise would do to their crea tures. The God of the Bible assures us of his love, bis sympathy. In all of our distresses his Interest In our af fairs and his provision for the ulti mate welfare of all those who will come Into the attitude of loving right eousness and hating Iniquity the only proper attitude of heart, the only one which he can approve and bless with everlasting life. A Night of Sorrow and Death. The Scriptures point out to us what we recognize to be the truth that the -world has been under a pall and blight and curse of death for sir thousand years. Appropriately our text de scribes this period as a dark time of Lard, blighting experiences, a night of weeping of sorrow. In harmony Wjlth this figure It declares that "dark ness covers the (clvlllzedi earth and Cross darkness the heathen." Not alone does this condition affect those who are In alienation from God through Ignorance and superstition and the power of sin. but It affects also those who have accepted the grace of God. who have turned their backs upon sin and who are seeking to walk in the narrow way. In the footsteps of Jesus. Well does the Apostle say. "The whole creation groanetb nnd travalletb In pain to gether until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we our selves groau within ourselves, waiting for the adoption; to wit. the redemp tion of our Body." tliH Body of which Jesus Is the Head t r . uief and we are symbolical members or an under prlestbood (Romans vlll. !. 'Mil. There Is a difference, however, be tween the Church and the world In this groaning, as suggested by the Apos tle's words. The world groans aloud without alleviation, uud even Its wait ing for the manifestation of the sons of God is a waiting in ignorance; for, being out of touch with the Eternal One. they know not of his gracious purposes and arrangements for these are kept secret from all except his sanitllied oues. "The secret of the Lord Is with them that fear (revcr-c-neei him and he will show them bis Covennnt" (I'snlm xsv. Hi. These who ssess the secret of the Lord "sorrow not as others who have no hope" (1 Thessalonlaus iv. 13). They "groan Inwardly" aud wait for the glo rlUcntlon of themselves and all the brethren, members of the symbolical Body of Christ, by participation In the First Ilesurreetlou. The hopes of these must be realized llrst. before the bless ing tan come to the "groaning crea tion" in general. The latter are wait ing for the manifestation of the sous of God; namely, the Church In glory. A Light In a Dark Place. The Bible represents Itself as being the candle of the Lord, the lamp of Divine Truth and enllgbteument. But it nils us that its light is not for the world cither uow or at nny time future. Its light is only for those who by faith and obedience unto consecra tion seek to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. They need the light. God pro vides it for them. These are repre sented by the Prophet as saying to the Lord. "Thy Word Is n lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (foot step!)) (Psalm cxl.t, 105). This light evidently does not shine far into the future, but enough for each onward step as It becomes due. St. i'eter auiplllles the same thought. After telllug us of the assurauce which he himself and his associates had upou the Mount of Transfiguration when they beheld "the vltlon" (Matthew xvli. M)i of the Lord miraculously trans formed and with him Moses and Eli jah and heard the voice from henven, it wus forceful to their mluds as teaching the coming of our Lord lu glory. In due time. Nevertheless, says the Apostle, honoring the Bible above any vision. "We have n more sure word of prophecy; whereuuto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shlnetb lu a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise" (II Peter I. 0). liidicutlug that the morning is at hand and that the Suu of Righteousness will soon fulfil Its mission of blessing all tbo families of the earth. But Why Is ThU Thu? . Why does God permit the reign of eln and death, Injustice, unrighteous ness, sorrow, trouble, pnlu. headaches, heartaches, etc.? Why does ho not deal with humanity graciously, kindly, lovlngly,as a Father as ho deals with tho angelic sons of God? is it Just er loving on the part of our Creator much sympathy do we suppose t'wt these Uoynl Priests should haveV Are they not to be on the Divine piano of glory, "members of the Body" of Mes siah, the great kingly priest after the order of Melrhlxedck? The eternal torment doctrine assuredly is not of God, not of the Bible, but. as St. Paul declares, one of the "doctrines of devils." The Inheritance of weaknesses, blemishes, sorrows, pain and trouble, to which we were born, is quite suttl clent nnd, according to the Scriptures, these are all part of death, and all faith at the present time. "Blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear." "lie that hath an ear let him hear." We recognize the wisdom of God In withholding the secret of his plan j from the world In general.
