Of course, we are very sorry for G4-e.1t Britain's plight in having to get a pie- from Oregon, yet it sounds nice for us. But Oregon is in muuft the same plight as that complained of by the eminent editor. Here, we c..n sny with truth, that it is n pity we have to send outside the state for our livestock and other things that ive could easily raise ourselves. There is really no reason why, for example, Portland should pay out nearly half n million dollars every month for cattle, poultry! nuts and butter. Other a.t sums leave Oregon, for various commodities and products that we should grow here, and all the time our wide acres of rich soil are re maining idle. Nature has done her part, but man here is neglecting his chances. But Mr. Bell did not see things merely to use them as subject of cm icism in his own country. He found the apple orchards of Medford and the manner of hnndling the fruit worthy of praise. And he liked the scenery of the coast, especially thai part of it viewed from the car win dows of the Southern Pacific express. Writing of the trip from Portland to San Francisco, Mr. Bell said: "The Mt. Shasta ronte. as this sec-' XOTICK Neruon Hicks.
