Four high school golfers earn scholarships to go toward college costs Four graduating golfers from high school teams in Umatilla and Morrow counties earned scholarships from the annual Kings & Queens Couples golf tournament. Jared Geier of Pendleton, Grace Blackhurst of Hermiston, Sophie Grant of Heppner and Riley Lank- ford of Pilot Rock each received $750 awards. Grants are based on participation on high school golf teams and college enrollment. “Our goal is to encourage young golfers to participate in the game as members of high school teams,” said Kings & Queens Chairman Don Obrist. “We believe there are many life lessons to be learned from golf and team athletics that deserve our support.” And the golfers seem to agree. “Even though playing as an indi- vidual is a large part of the game,” said Lankford, “being a team member is an even bigger aspect of it.” He said that the “constant competi- tion and accountability between team- mates holds everyone to a higher stan- dard than themselves.” Lankford will attend Blue Moun- tain Community College in the fall. “I have learned patience, perse- verance, dedication and, most impor- tantly, the love of the game,” said Blackhurst, who will be attending Brigham Young University-Idaho. “Even though golf has taught me a lot,” said Geier, “it will continue to teach me new things for the rest of my life.” He will be attending Columbia Basin College. Sophie Grant will be attending Pacific University. “I will use the experiences in golf to apply to col- lege and the working world. Hon- esty, courtesy and a positive mindset will serve me well as I move forward towards my career.” Now in its eighth year, the tourna- ment has presented over $10,000 in scholarships to 16 graduating golfers. The 2018 King’s & Queens couples golf tournament attracts golfing cou- ples of all ages and was held this year July 21-22 at Big River Golf Course in Umatilla.
