Hermiston (2-1) had gone 15 games without allowing more than 50 points going back to last season, but saw that streak end against a Lewiston (3- 1) team that was the tallest and fastest the Bulldogs had seen to that point. “(Lewiston) came out ex- actly as to be expected, and I think the girls expected them to be as good as they were, but I don’t think they realized how athletic Lew- iston was,” said Hermiston coach Juan Rodriguez. The Bengals wasted no time cluing them in, and used steals and quick tran- sition to race out to a 22-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs re- sponded, and had pulled within six by halftime with the score at 27-21, but they couldn’t match the Bengals in the second half. Maddy Juul led Hermis- ton with 16 points. “After the first quarter we settled down and played really well the rest of the game,” Rodriguez said. “Our half court defense was ‘A commitment to strong defense helped set the tone for the Bulldogs in the second half...’ actually really good against them, it was when they would get out in front of us with turnovers and long rebounds that we ran into trouble and they got a lot of easy baskets.” HERMISTON 46, WIL- SONVILLE 40 — Posts Kynzee Padilla and Maddy Juul came up big down the stretch, and the Hermiston girls basketball team ad- vanced to the championship of the Oxford Suites Holiday Classic with a 46-40 win over Wilsonville on Friday at The Dawghouse. Juul scored a game-high 15 points and Padilla pulled down some key late re- bounds to help close out the Wildcats (0-1). Padilla fin- ished with 12 boards to go with six points. Hermiston (2-0) coach Juan Rodriguez said it was a good day for his bigs to take over as the Bulldogs’ out- side touch was off for most of the game. “We knew there’d be games like this when the three’s wouldn’t be falling and we’d need our posts to come up big, and Maddy and Kynzee did today,” Ro- driguez said. Rodriguez said Wilson- ville’s defensive scheme was giving the Bulldogs trouble in the first half, and Hermis- ton led 19-17 at halftime. “They came out really aggressive in a zone and we had a little trouble handling it at first,” Rodriguez said. “We were getting the nor- mal shots we like to take, we just weren’t hitting them.” A commitment to strong defense helped set the tone for the Bulldogs in the sec- ond half, and the Bulldogs shooters were able to get into a little bit of a rhythm on the other end as well. Shaelynn Gilbert finished with nine points, Jazlyn Romero added seven and Rileigh Andreason had six. Teagan McNamee was high-point for Wilsonville with 10. The Bulldogs will see what Rodriguez said should be their toughest opponent of the young season today when they face Lewiston (ID) in the championship game at 5:45 p.m. “I thought they handled tonight mentally really well,” Rodriguez said. “I want to see how they’ll respond against a team that is as big and athletic as Lewiston.” ——— WHS 8 9 8 15 — 40 HHS 7 12 12 15 — 46 WILSONVILLE — T. Bulldog boys stay unbeaten Worship Hermiston Herald Sometimes in the sports it’s not about how a team wins, it’s about just finding a way to win. That was a philosophy the Hermiston Bulldogs boys basketball team took to heart this weekend, fin- ishing off a perfect 2-0 record at the Aloha Tour- nament with a gritty 51-44 win over the host Aloha on Saturday afternoon. Herm- iston started fast with a 12-3 lead after one quar- ter, but then fell into a funk that’s become a theme in the team’s first three games this season. “We jumped out with lots of energy but stum- bled in the second quarter, turned the ball over and just got sloppy,” Hermiston coach Casey Arstein said. Hermiston (3-0) went to halftime trailing Aloha 22- 18, but got a big boost from Cesar Ortiz in the second half to make a run. Ortiz, a sophomore guard, sank five 3-pointers in the second half and finished the game with 18 points to lead the Bulldogs. “We really battled in the second half, “Arstein said, “and Ortiz off the bench gave us a good spark. After that we never looked back and had a good second half overall.” Also scoring in dou- ble figures for Hermiston were two more sophomores as Andrew James had 14 points and Jordan Ramirez had 11 points. Those two players also helped Herm- iston’s second half push by putting a lot of defensive pressure on Aloha’s guards and forced numerous turn- overs in the Bulldogs’ fa- vor, Arstein said. Hermiston will hit the road again next Tuesday when they travel to Han- ford (WA). Until then, Ar- stein said the team will be busy at practice. “Winning two games on the west side, I’ll take it, but both games were real sloppy,” he said. “We’ve got a lot to work on in prac- tice, that’s for sure.” ————— HHS 12 6 17 16 — 51 AHS 3 19 15 6 — 44 HERMISTON — C. Chance Flores poured in a game-high 26 points for the Bulldogs (2-0), Xavier Rambo added 14 and James finished with 12. Thomas McCullough had just three points, but made them at key moments and grabbed some big rebounds said coach Casey Arstein. The Bulldogs outscored Wilson (0-1) 10-4 in over- time after the game was knotted at 66-all at the end of regulation. Hermiston went into halftime down 35-26, but made some key adjustments to get their offense going in the third quarter and scored 21 points in the frame. “The second half we spread them out a little bit and started attacking the basket with out passes,” Arstein said. “Everybody played their role, espe- cially in the second half. We fought back and kids played hard.” Max Lommen led Wil- son with 22 points and Maleek Elmi added 20. Hermiston will play in the tournament champion- ship today against Aloha.
