WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2016 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A5 RECORDS OBITUARIES Harold Ernest Reeves James J. ‘JJ’ Hurtado Betty Jane West Umatilla May 16, 1922-August 20, 2016 Hermiston May 19, 2002-August 18, 2016 Echo Harold Er- nest Reeves was born in Atchison, Kansas, on May 16, 1922, to par- ents Ernest Thomas and Flor- ence Rachel (Wind- er) Reeves. At the age of 94, God took Harold in His arms where he is now at peace on August 20, 2016. He was born Reeves and lived in Atchi- son, Kansas, until the age of 6 at which time he and his par- ents moved to Uma- tilla, Oregon, where Harold grew up. Harold was very fortunate to grow up in a very loving and close- knit family. Harold was the oldest of six children in his family. He had one brother, Bennie, and four sisters, Dottie (Reeves) Stephens, Norma (Reeves) Busler, Rita Jean (Reeves) Cream- er and Patsy (Reeves) Hutchinson. Harold attended Umatil- la schools, graduating from Umatilla High School in 1939. Following graduation Harold gained employment at Tum A Lum Lumber Company. He worked at Tum A Lum Lumber until called in 1942 to service during World War II. Harold entered the United States Marine Corps and began active service June 8, 1942, through June 10, 1946, at which time he received the United States Marine Corps &HUWL¿FDWH RI +RQRUDEOH and Satisfactory Service in World War II. During this enlistment he served as an automatic pilot mechanic and aircraft armorer in the 3DFL¿F7KHDWHUZLWKSULPD- ry involvement in the “con- solidation of the Solomon Islands,” from January 8, 1943, through February 2, 1944. Upon his return from overseas, he then complet- ed a course in precision ERPELQJ DQG ZDV FHUWL¿HG as a bombardier instructor on June 30, 1945. On June 19, 1946, Har- old re-enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve (inactive) for a period of four years, and was reappointed to the rank of corporal (aviation), his rank from March 1, 1943. He was then assigned to the Thirteenth Reserve District, headquartered at Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Wash. He was discharged from reserve duty on June 13, 1950. Harold again re-enlisted on June 14, 1950, back into the reserves as a basic in- strument trainer mechanic. On February 1, 1951, he was recalled back into ac- tive duty during the Korean &RQÀLFW,WZDVDOVRGXULQJ this time he received his promotion to staff sergeant on May 21, 1951. Upon his release from active duty on February 1, 1952, Harold went back into the reserves XQWLO KLV ¿QDO GLVFKDUJH from military service on December 30, 1952. Harold is the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pa- FL¿F0HGDODQG:RUOG:DU II Victory Medal. Upon his return to the States from deployment in 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Clara “Naomi” Brownell, on October 6, 1944, in Santa Barbara, Calif. Harold and Naomi had two children: Kevin Lance, born April 5, 1947, and Karin Ruth, born August 29, 1948. In addi- tion to their two children, Harold and Naomi were EOHVVHGZLWK¿YHJUDQGVRQV Lance and Scott Hartman, Robert “Robbie” Reeves, Patrick Reeves and Harold Reeves; one granddaughter, Shannon; one great-grand- daughter, Julianna Hart- man; one great-grandson, -RVKXD +DUWPDQ ¿YH stepgreat-granddaughters, Jordan, Katie, Rachael, Lysa and Lyndsay McBride; one stepgreat-great-grand- daughter, Janaya McBride; and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold re- mained in the U.S. Marine Corps re- serves during which time he continued his higher education at the University of California, San- ta Barbara. He ma- jored in education and minored in mu- sic, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Junior High Ed- ucation, January 25, 1951. Following the Ko- rean War, Harold and his family remained in Santa Barbara, Calif., where he ob- tained employment in the local theaters and became a life-long mem- ber of the Theatrical Stage Employees’ Union. He was employed by the Santa Bar- bara Lobero Theatre where he worked for the next 50 years in the capacity of master stage carpenter, building scenery for count- less stage productions. He was also a master in the art of sound and lighting pro- ductions as well. In 1984, after 50 years in the career of master stage carpenter and stage man- ager, Harold retired from the Lobero Theatre, receiv- ing his Honorary Lifetime Member “gold card” from the International Alliance of the Theatrical Stage Em- ployees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States and Canada. For 56 years, Harold and Naomi had an incredibly close and loving marriage; however, Naomi would pass, very unexpectedly, from our lives in September 2000. In 2001 Harold left Santa Barbara and returned to Umatilla to be closer to his siblings, his daughter and their families. Harold spent the re- mainder of his years en- joying weekly outings with his friends, siblings and daughter. He would also enjoy visits from his son Kevin and daughter-in-law Hak Boon “Susan” (Kim) Reeves, who reside in San Diego, Calif., and grand- sons Lance, who resides in Arizona, Scott, who lives in Idaho, Harold, who lives and attends college in New York, and granddaughter Shannon, who works and attends college in Cali- fornia. Thanks to modern technology, Harold was also able to enjoy receiv- ing news about grand- son Patrick, who resides in Vermont, and Robert (“Robbie”), who resides in Perth, Australia. Harold is preceded in death by his father, Ernest Thomas Reeves; mother Florence Rachel (Wind- er) Reeves; sisters Dottie Fay (Reeves) Stephens and Patsy Ione (Reeves) Hutchinson; and wife Clara “Naomi” (Brownell) Reeves. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Umatilla, Oregon. Doris Jean Amort Betty Jane West of Echo, Oregon, was born on No- vember 6, 1939, in Bayard, Nebraska, to parents Wil- liam “Bill” Sr. and Eliza “Peggy” Johnson Leis. She died on August 16, 2016, in Hermiston, Ore- gon, at the age of 76 years. Betty was raised in western Nebras- ka. She graduated West from high school in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, in 1959. Betty was united in marriage to Harold Landis “Lanny” West on June 5, 1964, in Scottsbluff, Ne- braska. September 14, 1926-August 16, 2016 Doris Jean Amort died early Tuesday morning, around 4:00 a.m. on Au- gust 16, 2016, while sleep- ing at her Sherwood Adult Family Home in Vancouver, Wash- ington. Her 10-plus year battle, demen- tia followed by Alzheimer’s, never stopped her from smiling. Kindness was always reward- Amort ed with a smile. Doris was born in Port- land, Oregon, on Septem- ber 14, 1926, to Amy and Chester Seafarth. Doris lost her daughter Amy to brain cancer (7/14/61- 4/16/65). Her parents, brother Norm and sister Evelyn all preceded her in death. Blessings are being made for all the Seafarth relatives. She attended Oregon State University and was a lifelong Pi Phi. Always a hard worker, she started her working career at US Steel as a secretary. Doris married John Amort on November 23, 1950. Be- ing a wife, working mom and a professional suited her well. “Use it or lose it. Never stop moving.” Doris and John moved from Portland to Eastern Oregon (Condon, Joseph, Hermiston and Pendle- ton). Her work at Inland Empire Bank, with Dr. Bittner and with Lemon Hermiston April 30, 1925-August 20, 2016 CPA provided wonderful friends. Doris was also very so- cial and loved crafts. She planned large events for preserving corn, as- paragus, jams and fruits, which were more about friend- ship than food. To relax she tailored her own clothes and was an award-win- ning knitter. The Church of the Re- deemer, PEO and the Del- phian Society were her volunteering outlets. Doris is survived by her husband John, her son Dan, daughter-in-law Jean, and grandchildren Mitchell and Jillian. A funeral service will be held in Pendleton, Oregon, Saturday August 27, 2016, at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer starting at 10:00 a.m. (reception, snacks and beverages to follow). Frank David McMillan Welches, Ore. December 3, 1931-August 5, 2016 F r a n k David Mc- Millan, 84, of Welches went into the presence of the Lord on Friday, August 5, 2016. He died at home from complications of Parkinson’s disease. A service celebrating Frank’s life was held at the Church of the Mountain in Welches on Saturday, August 20. Frank was born Decem- ber the 3, 1931, in Herm- iston, Oregon, to Opal and Daniel McMillan. He attended Hermiston High School. After high school Frank joined the U.S. Air Force and served in France. Frank married Valerie (Myers) on Jan. 21, 1979, in ny West, Echo, Ore.; sons Gary L. West, Hermiston, Ore., and Ronald E. West and Dean A. West, both of Echo, Ore.; brother William Leis Jr., Henderson, Nev.; sister Jeanette Schnell, Scottsbluff, Neb.; a granddaugh- ter, Suzanna Schuck, Portland, Ore.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cous- ins. The mother declined medical help. Stanfield police began an investigation. 7:59 p.m. - Law enforcement received a report of an archer trying to poach deer on the west side of Umatilla River Road When they say “Let’s play a game!” and you say “It’s going to rain?” near Sunset Trailer Court, Umatilla. The archer was gone by the time officers checked. SUNDAY, AUG. 21 1:12 a.m. - A caller reported a man and woman looked like they were assaulting each other in a car in a parking lot on West Jennie Avenue, Hermiston. 1:52 p.m. - An Irrigon resident reported the driver of a 1980s model gold Chevrolet pickup speeds on Southeast Utah Avenue. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office contacted the driver, who said he would slow down. 8:36 p.m. - Juveniles smashed pump- kins and watermelons in a field behind Paul Smith Road, Boardman. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office responded, and the youths arranged to reimburse the owner. 9:03 p.m. - A man on Pendleton Avenue, Umatilla, reported someone just egged his house. 10:16 p.m. - One male assaulted another at East and Sixth streets, Umatilla.
