No. 15147 IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON, FOR MARION COUNTY. Department No. 2. *0 «?Aurora Observer Entered as second class matter March 28, 1911, at the -postoffice at Aurora, Oregon, under'the A ct of March 3,1879. Geo. E. Knapp, Editor and Publisher EDITORIAL Opinions o f the Observer EVER since America went into the world war it has seemed to be the main purpose of law makers to study up some new form by which they can get moré money from the tax payers. Every year these de mands get larger and larger and are put on the statute books with a view to making the tax payer believe his taxes will be reduced instead of increased. The measure to be voted on next month, the proposed state income tax, is a piece of very undesirable legisla tion and should be voted down. The exemption from taxation of banks, insurance companies and other large corporator s does not tend to commend it to the ordin ary citizen whose taxes are plenty large enough already without hav ing them increased while the cap italist escapes. But apart from this, it is what we would term freak legislation and Oregon has already made enough experiments. We do not need more laws. What we need is better enforcement of the laws we have. The citizens of this state would be far better off if we could repeal three fourths óf the existing laws and discharge about that proportion of the office holders. The time has pretty nearly come when our representa tives in the state legislature should take a little thought for the inter ests of their constituents and de vote less time to figuring out schemes to get more money while deluding the people into the belief that they are working to relieve their burdens. State Bankers’ Association at Portland Passes Resolution Whereas, this meeting of bank ers, business men and farmers was called for the purpose of con ferring with Hon. Eugene Meyer and Hon. Frank W . Mondell, of the War Finance Corporation, who are visiting the Northwest, at the request of the president, in order to obtain first-hand information regarding the wheat situation; and Whereas, we deeply appreciate the Interest of President Coolidge in agricultural conditions in the great Northwest, as evidenced by the presence here today of Mr. Meyer And Mr. Mondell : and Whereas, the interesting and in structive addresses of Mr. Meyer and Mr. Mondell clearly empha sized the fundamental importance and necessity of aiding and encour aging the co-operative marketing of wheat on a state wide scale, and especially of bringing about a clos er relationship and better under standing between t h e country banker and soundly organized and properly managed cooperative mar keting associations; Now Therefore Be It Resolved:. That this meeting heartily indorses the principles of co-operative mar keting on a commodity basis, and the chairman, as president of the Oregon Bankers’ Association, is authorized and requested to ap point a committee of five bankers the membership of which may be enlarged at his discretion, to co operate with the committee re cently formed in Chicago, of which ex-Govemor Lowden is chairman, together with other farm organiza tions, to study and promote the co operative marketing of wheat on a state wide scale: and to actively assist in bringing about a better understanding and closer relation ship between country bankers and the co-operative marketing move ment in this state.
