AURORA STATE BANK Physician and Surgeon The amazing possibilities of national profits from nat ional economies are revealed m statistics furnished by the Fuel Administrator. It is shown that the money saved by American people who locked up their automobiles for a gasless Sunday—on September 1—amounted to $1,250,000, This is enough to feed the whole American Army in France for two days; to buy 5,000 machine guns costing $250.00 each, or to provide 35,784 completely equiped rifles for the' American Infantry. Senator A.M. La Follett has filed as an “independent” candidate for re-election. After being defeated in the Republican primaries, he asks Republicans to betray the candidates they choose. He has no claim whatever upon the Republican party or any member there of. By his renegade tactics he has placed himself without the pale of decent party politics. The party should declare its “independence” of all such renegades who embrace the tenets of the party only so far as it suits their purposes. In spite of the nasty insinuations of the Woodburn In dependent concerning the Observer and the motive of its questions concerning the Independent’s allegations con cerning the weakness of Seymour Jones as a candidate for the Speakership of the Oregon House of Representatives, there is no question of the ability of Mr. Jones, any more than-there is of the chronic grouch of the Independent, whose record is not quite clear enough to allow it to make unresented insinuations-on “leg pulling.” The large part that women are taking in war activi ties is shown by the 48 bond subscriptions to the 4th Liberty Loan, in the Aurora Banking district, totalling $4800—almost one fourth of the entire amount. Thfe North Dakota farmer of German descent, with a son on the French front, and who subscribed for the entire bond quota of his town, has no relatives or imitators in Oregon. World news is all right, but OUR BOYS want NEWS OF THIS TOWN. They want the home newspaper. Publishers are prevented from sending their papers free to anyone, even boys in the service. Consequently a national movement has been started by Col. William Boyce Thompson of New York, who is acting as President of the Home Paper Service of America to give the boys what they are calling for. Every community is joining the movement. Let us see that our boys are not forgotten. Send to the publisher of this newspaper whatever amount of money you can—5 cents or $50.00. We will publish a list each week of those contributing, and the amounts contributed. Every cent received will be used to send this paper to our boys at the front. If at the end of the war, there is any surplus, it will be turned over to the local Red Cross Committee. There is no profit in this to the publisher— even in normal times, subscriptions are not sold at a profit. With war prices prevailing, and the high rate of postage on papers sent to France, our cost will scarcely be covered by our full subscription price. Remember that over in France, some brave soldier or sailor from this town—perhaps even some splendid woman working within sound of the guns—is depending on you to “KEEP THE HOME LOVE KINDLED."
