i THE A U R O R A OBSERVER THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 22, 1917. N. C. W E S C O T T ..............................................E ditor and P ublisher Entered as second class matter Ma®eh 28, 1911, at the postoffice at Aurora Oregon, under the A ct o f March 3. 1879. ' l i j j j É \\ \ g k ^ 1 \ Y ^ I pledge allegiance to my ñag and the republic for which it stands, one Nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice to all. l - 11 OUR ENEMIES AT HOME It is unwise to make unpatriotic remarks. During the last week no less than a score o f men were mobbed in Oregon and Washington for that very thing. Mob action is wrong, but if ever justifiable it is in such a cause. There is no room in our life today for the man who talks against America, who opposes our government, or who sympathises with Kaiserdom. Such men would betray our soldiers into the hands of., our enemies if they could, hence it is not strange that American citizens sometimes take the law into their own hands for the punishment o f such men. For the nation now knows its mind. It will allow no soldier to be stabbed"in the back by enemies at home—be they alien enemies, pro-Prussian sympathizers, pusillanimoas pacifists, or indifferent Americans. The country’s verdict has been passed, and every man who at tempts to override that verdict faces a peril that will in crease day by day, for it is the avowed purpose o f this country to support its soldiers to the limit o f human sacri fice. If there be still indifferent citizens, it is time for them to remember that the American spirit is running high, and that in war-time every man who is not FOR the nation is AGAINST it; and that he who is against the na tion is against our homes and our hopes and against our children and their future. Let him who is against the future o f our children beware! W. Thomas Woodward, a banker at Lewis, Iowa, I after entering a plea o f guilty, was fined $500 and sen tenced to 6 months in jail for advising people not to buy | Liberty Bonds. Our pro-German friends often tell us that this is a free country. That js true. It is a free country—free to come lo, free to live in, free to prosper in, but not to | traduce, to abuse, to betray, or to turn over to the tender mercies o f Prussianism! S ixty D ollars Though-America is at war, we may remember on Thanksgiving Day to be thankful that we have escaped death and devastation within our boundaries ;that we have been sj arcd the agon es o f hunger! the pli ndcrirg o f our homes, and the enslavement o f our loved ones. J The first money Grover Cleveland ever earned was from bis uncle, Lewis F. Alien. He got sixty dollars for six weeks’ work helping to compile a book. He banked the money in Buffalo, N. Y. Did you bank the first money you earned ? Are you banking your money n ow ? The state superintendent o f banking has sent out a let ter to all state banks in Oregon advising them to join the Federal Reserve system, both as a patriotic duty and as at matter o f economic expediency. “ The system needs the support o f the banks now, and latter the banks will need the support o f the system, and now is the time to form the alliance,” says the superintendent. See us today about opening an account. Banking of all kinds. AURORA STATE BANK You can sail a boat, run a mill, and sometimes charm an audience with “ Wind” , but it takes cash to run a newspaper. Labor, paper, ink, postage, taxes, insurance and equipment all cost money, and plenty o f it. For this and various other good reasons (such as the desirability off bacon and eggs, whole wheat bread, breakfast food, and I a trace o f sugar, etc.,) the Observer will shortly spend three cents in stamps for each subscriber, in and effort to “ bring home the bacon” and to insure the subscriber 52 more weekly visits o f the “ great family weekly.” IVAN DIMICK’S GARAGE A U RO RA, OREGON W e Carry a Full Line o f Accessories W e are prepared to do all kinds o f Auto Repair ing. The Government announces that our present sugar supply is just sufficient for our own consumption until the I first o f the year. A fter January 1, the W est Indian! ■ crop will be available and will relieve the sugar shortage, i From now until the end o f the year no more than 6 table spoons o f sugar per day should be used per person for all purposes. A family o f five should limit the sugar used for all purposes to one pound (2 cups) per day. The Food Administration urges the use o f glucose, molasses, cornj syrup, and dried fruits, instead o f sugar fo r making holi-i day confectioneries. persons interested in same are FOR SALE hereby notified to be present at Holstein Friesian bulls ready for ser said place and date to express vice. It appears that acts o f the legislature or eveif the people themselves are not law until confirmed by the courts. One looks in vain in state and Federal constitutions for the delegation o f such pow ers to the judicial department o f our governments.
