THE SUMPTER MINER. Wednesday, January io, 1900 SUMPTER WELL AND WIDELY KNOWN. District Favorably Compared With California Mines. EDITOR MINER: After seven months pleasantly spent In the Hlue mountains of eastern Oregon, I find myself again on my old stamping ground. With some knowledge of your mining field and a tolerable familiarity for thirty years with mining belts of California and a pretty thorough inquiry as to the progress made here during my absence, I can only say that the favorable impression I got while in the Webfoot state east of the Cascade mountains Is only Intensified by compari son with what I hitherto thought was the nuial of any section of this world, taking Its record of a quarter of a century as a basis by which to judge. California Is a great gold producer yet and will be for an Indefinite time, but the opportunities for profitable investment and for quick returns I unhesitatingly assert are far superior in the Sumptcr and ad joining mining districts. When one-half the number of stamps are dropping there as there are in this state, the annual proJuct will open the eyes of the world. San l-'ranclscn, like Portland, has been slow to discover the advantages possessed by your mining fields, and still accept statements with a good many grains of allowance. It seems to me that every miner In Maker county should be a subscriber to the Portland h'venlng Telegram. It will do much to advertise your section where It will do good. Ilut I feel quite sure that the merits of the different districts will ad vertise themselves. Your town of Sumpter is becoming pretty well known. The tide that Is going to Cape Nome In the spring Is remarkable. It is caused prlnciply by the great army of unem ployed. The proportion of Idle men In California is much larger than in Oregon. The egress of a large number of them to Alaska will relieve the congestion and hence will be a desirable thing for those who are left behind. We haven't any snow here, and the mercury seldom gets anywhere near the freezing point; but one will shiver more than In wintry eastern Oregon. I e.xpect to see Sumpter putting on met ropolitan airs by the time I arrive there. H. J. Watson. San Francisco, January 4. A. F. and A. M., Attention. A smoker will be held at Ellis opera house Saturday, January I), at 8 p. m., in honor of the pilgrims who are going to Cortland to attend the Scottish Kite leremonles and for other purposes. All Masons are earnestly and cordially in vlted to attend. COMMITTEE. Watch next week's Issue of Tilt: MINER tor announcement of Vinson's West Side aJditlon to Sumpter. Solliliue for shoes. Standard or fancy table wines, cham pagnes and after dinner liquors at the t Mint saloon, corner Center and Sumpter streets. NOTICE IOR PUBLICATION.
