First among the gay scenes that encountered him there Were the lights and the surge of the St. Louis Fair; There the millions of mankind will haste to display The twentieth century's proudest array Of marvels; for wonders will grow more and more. There will be an election and with eloquence grand Politicians will static through this opulent land, Bulldozing, inducing, whitewashing, applying All the arts of persuasion, with sou little lying; And candidates prows?, as they promis'd before, In One Thousand Nine Hundred and Naught and a Four. There'll be railroads and railroads; they're coming amain; And surveyors are streaming trom RoJchurg and Drain; The cow-catchers rushing right into our town Will knock down the knockers, if they don't get aroun'; And a new depot stand at our own cabin door In One Thousand Nine Hundred and Nought and a Four.
