:u V .... f3ft f RANK ELROD DIES SUDDENLY IN ALASKA Heart Disease Carries off a Man m .t. ' and Favorably Known Here. On Saturday mornliiR tho fatit o Frank Elrod received by letter tho ead news of his death at St Michaels, Alaska, on July tho Sth. Two lettors wore re ceived, both written by Elmer Sauder lin. One was dated July 2nd and told of Mr. Elrod'a tcrious illness, and tho other dated July 10th gavo an account of his death and burial, Unfortunately the first was delayed too long to perform its offico of a warning, and tho shock to the wife and family is very hard. it seems that M. Elrod contracted some troublo of the lungs and heart in trie mines at Dawson last winter and was obliged to go to a hospital at Daw eou. Ho apparently recovered and was feeling unuAlly well until ho started down tho river, as pilot and master of the steamer I.ovell Young, tho finest of the Yukon river fleet. All the way down the river ho was sick, and on ar rival at St Michaels July "41 ho was perr suaded to see a doctor, who advised him Jo go to tho hospital. The doctor at tho time told Mr. El rod'e friends that t was an incurable cage of heart disease, although bo might rally and livo toveral years. 11 o went to tho hospital on tho 3rd, where ho had the best of caro. Ilia needs Elmer Eanderlin, Copt. Robert Fredericks, and Mr. Livingston, former )y of Zandon wero with him, also the officers and managers of tho steamboat line and every possible caro and at tac tion wasjeiven him. but without avail. Tho funeral occurcd on the 101b, un ,der the auspices of tho Masons and Odd Fellows, to both of which order: r o be longed, and all that was mortal of Frank Irod rests on a hijlside overlooking the ocean. Dsceaesd, whose full name was Wil liam Francis Elrod, was born on Princo Edwards Island, Aug. 2$th 1847. Wnon ho was three years old his parents moved to Iowa, where ho grew to manhood, eetving in an Iowa regiment during the .civil war. Up canio to Coos 15 ay about 1875. Jle worked first for II. P. Whitney in ,tho butchering business. Afterwardj .he worked in tho woo is and as a rafts ,inan and later was eteamboatlng for a r.umber of years. Ho served us marshal .of this town for about four years. Concluding to try his fortune in the North, ho leit hero on Feb. 17, 1893, and has been in Alaska ever since, having been steamboating on tho Yukon when tho river was open. He had risen to tho position of master and pilot on tho Quest boat on tho river, and intend ed to visit his home hsro this Fall. He3ides tho wfdow, whoso maiden inamo was Mary J. Maddin, to whom he was married in Marshfleld on Dec. .112, H78, three daughters and one son nurvive him, viz: Mrs. Etta Sacchi .MiesesFiances and Stella and Master Iris JJlroJ.all of this place. Ho was a Macon, an Odd Follow aud a moaiber of tho A. 0. U. , in which iho carried 12C0Q insurance. Frank Elrod was a man whom ovory one liked and respected; who would take his place as a man among men in any locality and under any circumBtanceB.
