The present series of sketches is uo exception'. Mrs. Croker can both tell a gcod story and make a story good in the telling. She has the art of causing the most trival incident to live. There is little out of the ordinary ritu of experience in the happeuiug in this book, iifa certain grisly ghost storv. which seems somehow to have strayed into more cheerful company, be excepted. But whether the scene is in dingy lodgings in a failed Dublin street, among th? Minister peasantry, on a Scotch moor, or away in au up country Indian .-tatioit, we meet real iople, sketches necessarily, but sketches that leave a very dcnticu impression. 1 Here is a form of Chinese epigram of which its admirers say that though the words stop, the sense goes oil. That is very much the way with Mrs. Crocker's concise narrations, i'licre are several of the acquaint auces for which we arc indebted to this uook that we should like to continue. But as Mrs. Crockc: knows, it is one of the marks of a good short story that it stimulates rather than sarisiies. London Literary World. The ob ject of this publication if to create an interest iu the study of Oregon History aud thereby assist in de veloping an Oregon-spirit in or der to stimulate growth in every thing pertaining to the welfare of the State. Address all inquir ies about this publication to Geo. II. Himes, Assistant Secretary, Oregon Historical Society rooms, City Hall, Portland, Oregon. The July Delineator reaches us early, and is au exceptionally fiue number of that premier of fashion magazines. The color work is suberb, especially the three-color printing iu an article on the Pau-Ainericau Exposition. The Delineator has had the ad vantage of working directly from the original water color .sketcues of C. Y. Turner, Director of Col or of the Exposition, aud the pherfectiou attained iucolor work at high speed is something penorucnal. Besides being the leading fashion magazine, the Delineator touches many other matters of special interest and value to the housewife and host ess. In illustrated cookery, photogrsps are shown of nine dishes uniquely gotten up for a 'Liberty Luncheon." If some Marshfield hostess doesn't!. carry out ttiis new aud elmrtuing idea. about the Foutth of July, it will bo a case of opportunity lost. The litcmrv featmes of the num ber arc :.cellcut and the usual departments are fully covered. But one criticism can be made. and the Delineator is probably i ' less lax in this respect than any I other fashion magazine. But it is a lamentable fact that illustri-' MOMTtntoj?'tions 0f I'nshiotts are usu.illv n?ftp3 drawn by "ai lists" who haw up- of the invisible .spectrum.
