Lloyd, the six year old sou of Mr. and Mrs. David Russell died at Condon, June 13 of peritonitis, after five days illness. The ohild was a grandson of Mrs. M. D. Vaughn of this city. :, Charley-Walter and wife, of Wes ton, were visiting iu the oity this week, having come over to meet bis brother, Harrey, who with his family wore guests at the Will Miller home. H;Mr. and Mrs, V. E. Hoven left luesday for Turner, near Salemk where they will attend the annual conven tion of the Christian churches of Ore gon. . They will be abseut about two weeks. They left Athena at 6 a. m. and took breakfast in the garden city. J. W. Maloney and Lee Teutsch have been re-elected school directors at Pendleton. Nib Yiug, the well known Chinese caok who has been with the St Nio- hols hotel for many years past, left Wednesday for a year's visit to hia old borne in China. Nib is a Christian Chinaman and has many friends in Athena. whom he has gained by his in tegrity of character and his generosity. The girls of the Baptist Sunday school are making preparations to hold fair and sale some time in July. Weekly meetings are held where arti cles for wear and use are made, and many beautiful and useful things will be on sale atthat time. An ice cream festival will be held In conjunction. : Wednesday, afternoon a number of young ladies were entertained at the ' nospicaoie nome oi min. Ausunjc oss. Needlework was the " employment of the afternoon, after which the young ladies were refreshed with ioes and dainty oonf actions. A most enjoyable afternoon was passed, and it was the general opinion of all that these social occasions should be continued each week, as such privileges have been sadly neglected in Athena of late. Sixteen young ladies enjoyed the hos pitality of Mrs. Foss and voted her a charming hostess. Llhis evening at the M. E. ohurob, tVlass JSo. i, under the supervision or Mrs. MoBride will give an entertain ment which will be replete with new features. A short but excellent lit erary program in the main auditor ium will begin the pleasures of the evening, after which the guests will be invited into the Epworth League room, where a guessing contest win be inaugurated. : Prizes will be.award ed, both for the test guess, and the one widest of the mark. Booths will be erected wherein cooling ioes, and lusoious candi.es will be dispensed. Light , refreshments will be served free, and a small admission fee of 10 cents will be charged at the door. - A liberal patronage is solicited as this class is , anxious to finish up the payment on their bond. . .
