The supposed suicide of animals raises a subtle problem, and to deny It Is to fly in the face of deep-rooted popular belief. It Is just as much a natural history myth, however, as the hoary-headed belief in the adder swal lowing its young In time of peril, the toad living in a stone nadule for thou sands of years or the germinating pow ers of mummy wheat The most ancient felo de se verdict of the mythmongers relates to the habit of scorpions dig ging their stings into their heads when unable to escape from fire. Experiments have proved the fallacy of the scorpion's suicide, notably those carried out some years ago by Dr. E. Ray Lankester, director of the natural history department of the British mu .seum, and Professor Bourne of Madras. Scorpions were confined In an extreme ly hot place from which escape was im possible and their frantic gymnastics . were carefully studied with serene and philosophic complacency. . As In the case of the tortured rattlesnake biting Its own body, the action of the scorpion In an apparent attempt to put an end to Its sufferings by stinging its head was purely muscular, and Dr. Lankes ter himself compared the action to the biting the dust attributed to men who die in hand-to-hand struggles or to the biting of their own hand or arm by unhealthy children in a paroxysm of anger. That animals bring about their own deaths by violent and abnormal actions is certain, but if all the contributory causes could be ascertained It would probably be found that they did so un der the pressure of some torturing pain producing hysterical madness. Pall Mall Gazette. - Resourceful. . "That's a pretty big squash," re marked Senator Clark, while gazing on an Indian Territory specimen. "It reminds me of a big squash that was to have been exhibited at one of the county fairs back home. The man that raised it was an enterprising fellow, and he had found out In some way that by feeding milk to a squash vine tremendous squashes could be raised. So he raised this one, and It was a whopper. He had to drive a long way to town over rough roads, and un fortunately In unloading the squash, It dropped to the ground and burst What was the owner's surprise to find that the milk which had accumulated In the squash had been churned Into butter. He was a resourceful man, so he entered the butter among the dairy exhibits and took a prize with that You can't keep some men down." j Neediest Expenae. In a certain town In the north of England recently, an old couple were driving down a steep hill In their the horse was startled, and It set off at full gallop down the hill. "Letters from a Surgeon," however, contains an anecdote In which Its existence is evi dent. Doctor Perry, surgeon of the Twentieth Massachusetts, wakened In camp one morning to find himself tight ly held in the clutch of Doctor Hay ward, his senior officer. "Don't move, John, till I say three 1" ordered the senior, sharply. "Then seize my hands and spring to your feet One, two, three 1" At the word Doctor Perry jumped, and never made a cleaner leap. He was Just in time to see a moccasin dive under the coat which he had been us ing for a pillow. Armed with sticks, they dragged the coat away, but saw only the hole into which the snake had glided. The surgeon had accidentally blocked the entrance to the reptile's abode, and It had lain all colled under the back of his neck, waiting patiently for him to move so it could enter. The next day the sur face of the road was covered with a thin glazed crust Rain removed this In parts, but where tbe glaze remained there was no dust for five days. BY IMPURITIES IN THE. BLOOD) Whenever a'sore refuses to heal it la because the blood Is" not "pure and healthy, as it should be, but is infected with poisonous germs or some old blood taint which has corrupted and polluted the circulation. Those most usually afflicted with old sores are persons who have reached or passed mid dle life. The vitality of the blood and strength of the system have naturally begun to decline, and the poisonous germs which have accumulated because of a sluggish and inactive condition of the system, or some hereditary taint which has hitherto been held in check, now force an outlet on the face, arms, legs or other part of the body. The place grows red and angry, festers and eats into the surrounding tissue until it becomes a chronic and stubborn ulcer, fed and kept open by the impurities with which the blood is saturated. Nothing is more trying and disagreeable than a stubborn, non-healing sore. The very fact that it resists ordinary remedies and treatments is good reason for suspicion; the same germ-producing cancerous ulcers is back of every old sore, and especially is this true if the trouble is an inherited one.
