Dr. Smith was up from Pendleton yesterday on professional business. ' Granges will be organized shortly in Weetou, Hermiston and other towns. ' X John Bell has purohased the Ely farm west of town, containing 160 aores, for $12,000. Tbe Crocket place near Freewater, containing 24 aores, was sold this week for $280 an acre. Misses Kate and Jessie McEwen came up from Pendleton and spent Sunday at their home here. Mrs. Zepb Lock wood and daughter of Helix, have been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Shiok. Mrs. Agues Ferguson came down from Pomeroy, Wash., Wednesday and ia tho guest of Athena friends. A marriage lioeuse has been issued to Charles Richmond and Maude Hemphill, both of this county. The fair will be held on Main street, and sup per will be served. Further announce ments later. A caucus meeting will be bold in Adams next Monday evening for the purpose of nominating officers for the city election, wbioh will be held tbe second Monday iu December. A mayor, three oounoilmen, a treasurer and recorder will be nominated at this meeting. At Hunt's Junction yesterday 127 oarloads of Northern Paoiflo west bound freight were side-tracked . as a result of tbe cave-in at a Cascade tun nel. The 127 cars were loaded witb merchandise consigned to poiuts on the Sound. Much of the freight con sists of holiday goods. ' Don't overlook the low prioes of olotbing at Manasee's- . W. F. MatJook, Fred Hendley and William Roaobe, of Peudleton, were arrested on tbe charge of gambling but were acquitted at tbe trial tor want of evideuoe. Sam Miller, keeper of tbe house wbere tbe arrests were made, pleaded guilty to gambling on Nov. 20 and was fined $100. Robt. Genevay returned Wednesday night from a visit o relations in Iowa and Illinois. He reports that be bad a royal good time. Old Iowa, he says, has tho largest corn crop in the history of tbe state, and farmers ate offer ing $2 per day for men to husk com and oanuot get help at that price.
