His offer to make tbe state a present of bis print lag outfit may be placed to tbe credit of tbe fellow as an act of gratitnde tot the kindness shown bim by 'the people of Oregon in giving bim a obanoe to become wealthy by taxing themselves in tbe perpetuation of tbe Kraft that is known to exist in tbe atute printing offioe. Bat there is a burr under Mr. Baker's krnpper, and this bnrr is tbe canBe for bis spas modic benevolent epeil. Baker, who before his election to tbe ofHoe'of state printer, was earning $25 per week at the "case. " His terms of office is said to have netted bim a foitnne. Not con tent with this, be held on to his plant and tribute baa been paid bim by other men eleoted to the offioe sinoe his, Baker's, term expired. But in Mr. Duniway, the state printer-elect, who by the way, ia a practical printer in every respeot, Baker bus bumped up against a very ptickly bnrr. Mr. Dun iway does not propose to fatten Baker's pocket book any further from j the proceeds of the state printing office, and unless tbe owner of the present plant comes speedily to reason able terms j proposes to install a new and modern plant. Hence Mr. Baker's bin ft in making tbe offer of his plant to the state as a gift, with the understanding that tbe office of state printer be placed on a flat salary, Tbe Press favors and would like to see tbe offioe placed on a fiat salary basis, but rather than see Baker have any oredit for puttiug it there, after bav ing feathered bis neat from tbe emoluments of tbe offioe as it is, this paper would perfer tbe present plan of doing tbe state piintug. The condi tions being known, tbe taot that Baker cannot "stick" Duniway for a royal ty on what is termed by knowing printers to ue au ousoiete piaut prompting bim to make his offer to tbe state, is rnvoltng to a degree of addiug insult to injury. By all means let Duniway select an up to date piinting plant. Then tbe state should take it off bis hands at cost mid carriage, place bim on a flat sulaiy, and tell Mr. Baker to shovel his junk iuto the soi up heap, where it belongs. responded in a most gratifying manner and tbe merchants weie well pleased with tbe plan. Tbe idea baa already been carried out in several cities. Mr. Frank Baker, ex-state printer and ex-state republican boss, leans back in bis $10,000 plush covered obair and tells a $ 15 a-week reporter, as be puffs rings of smoke from a $5 cigar, to say to tbe 80 cent people of Oregon that be proposes to make them a present of bis 10 oent print shop. Then be dreams a $20,000 dream and puts the reporter next to the faot that once upon a time he was one of the common herd and bad tbe pbat take of $25 per on a morning paper. Then at the thought of being a self made (?) man, be smiles a $5000 smile, brushes the cigar ashes from tbe sleeve of bis $1000 coat, taps tbe toes of bis $300 shoes together, and with another $5000 smile dismisses tbe scribe. And the reporter. What of him. Why, be has tbe "stuff" for a story. Verily, some men are born great others lucky, t The aim of tbe reformers fa school and college athletics should be clearly and directly tbe betterment of coudi tions, not tbe extirpation of tbe love of combat wbiob is inherent in the nature cf mankind. Tbe notion tbat bard general work, resulting iu full musoular development, saps vitality, weakens tbe organs and is a wearying incubus to tbe individual is so illogic al as hardly to deserve au answer, re marks tbe Boston Post. But som persons Relieve this. Saob should pity tbe wild animals tbat, guided only by an instinotive physiological need, run, jump, pursue and wrestle with one another, thereby using and developing fully their whole bodies. A plan for drawing trade to a town that has been succesfully wok red at several poiuts might be adopted to ad vantage in tbis city. ' Tbe plau ia as follows: Au agreement was reached between all the merchants whereby they offered special sales ou certain days, each merchant seluotiug some certain line of goods upon wbiob be made a lower prioe thuu usual. Thus one dry goods house would Bell gloves at a special price, while auotber would offer bargains in dress goods. Oue hardware merchant would reduoe the prioe ou stoves. Every line of business was represented and care was taken that uo conflicts occurred. Prizes were then offered to the farmer bringiug in the best loud of grain or tbe bunclrtoiuoHt baby and the bnrguiu day was extensively advertised in the surrouudiug country, tbe names of the merchants and their special sales be ing in nil cases stilted. The farmers Cattlemen and sheepmen to tbe number of 208 were at Sumpter last week iii conference witb tbe forest reserve officials in adjusting their rauga allotments for 1907. These men represented over 400 owners, whose holdings in stock and land ex ceed a valuatoni of $10,000,000. Tbe range in tbis division of the Blue Mountain reserve is abont 300,000 acres, and applications call for almost as muob more, even witb the previous announcement tbat oats off from 10 to 40 per cent in tbe uumber of sheep and oattle allowed for next year. . Tbe Union Republican gives tbe iu formation that sinoe the recent elec tion in Colorado, leaders in both par ties auuoanoo that it is time to end the female suffrage matter, that tbe results have demonstrated time and again tbat women are a failnre in politics and in publio offioe. Tbe po litical leaders of tbe Contennial State are said to be against a continuance of tbe iaroe, and announce that many Colorado women wish to retire from politics entirely. Wood, tbe luoky dog I He has heal ed up that old sore of humiliation we opened for him once, when we com pared bis bass voice iu chorus practice to tbe bellowing of a Hereford bull. He insinuate tbat the musical editor of tbis paper always "imagined be could play a trombone, but only emit ted discordant sounds like a jackass in distress, and more than onoe disrupted the Athena band."
