ICORROTS AT FAIR FIFTY BOHTOC HEAD-HUNTERS - . ' NOW OH THE WAY. They Are Imported For Exhibition Pnrposei By Special Permission of Governor Wright. Portland, July 13. By the 1st of August fifty Bon too Igorrotes will reach Portland, to bnild a village at the Lewis and Clark Exposition and remain as a living ethnological exhibit annng tne lair, l or a time it seemed that Portland was not going to have this interesting featnra. hn aft much hard work on the part ,of those interested in tne enterprise tne consent of Uncle Sam was seoured and .the Igorrotes were collected and put aboard ship at Manila. It was nec essary to oo tain tne consent or Becre . tary Taft and Governor Luke E. ; Wright, of the Philippine Islands, be fore the natives could be procured. The government gave its consent for the head-hunters to come to America only after receiving rigid assurance that they would be returned to their homes. At the Portland fair these people of limited apparel will do their peculiar dances, eat dog, smoke cigar ettes and otherwise add to the gaiety of the exposition. , Their village will be located near the Homer Davenport bird and animal farm. - As this will be the first time any of these interest ing wards of the nation have been on exhibition in the Pacific West, it is expected that they will attract much attention. Centennial Notes. Somebody has unearthed from the t -w v ww mvuuvu' auioiiuu bull) ; little item,, of present interest, which wo yiiu.uu iu wo issue ui oepiemoer . 2,.' 1863: "In cutting some timber jin i Omaha a few days since a bullet was found imbedded in the trunk of a rock elm. The grains which had over- ijiuiu xb buuw tun. i. mns. uuvh oeen deposited there sixty-two years ago.t a time when the country had not yet been visited by any white men, ex cept the explorers, Lewis and Clark." The skull and horns of a Rooky Mountain sheep were found some time ago by an Idaho man, firmly imbed ded twenty feet from the ground in the trunk of a large tree. The sec tion containing the curiosity has been taken to the Lewis and Clark Exposi tion where it is attracting much atten tion. It is presumed that when the v tree was a sapling tne sneep got en tangled in its branohes and died. As the sapling grew iuto a tree, the sheep was lifted upward and its skull aud horns became imbedded in the trunk. flashed from the snow line of Mt. Hood, to a station near the Govern ment buildings . on the Lewis and Clark Exposition grounds, seventy miles distant. A squad of United States troops in command of a lieu tenant has established a signal station near the summit of the grand old peak and the exposition is in daily com munication with the mountain. Sever al parties of adventurous people will climb to the summit of Mt. Hood dur ing the summer as a sort of side trip from Portland the exposition city. The Fourth of t July attendance at the exposition was 63,708. This is at least 30 per cent, more than the most sanguine of the officials expected. It beats the "Fourth of July attendance at the Omaha exposition by nearly 10,000 and is 14,181 higher than the attendance on the opening day at Port land,' June 1. Up to July 1 half a million admissions bad been recorded in 'the thirty-four days of the big fair. This aggregate is far above expecta tions. The attendance is increasing daily, and all indications point to a total that will break every exposition record, consideriug' the neighboring population. The Fair will run until October 15. FEW LICENCES ISSUED. Homer. Aro Blow In Securing Permit, to Kill Game. Up to the present time but fifteen hunters' licenses have been issued by County Clerk Saling,- though it has been several weeks since the law became operative regarding this fea ture of the game laws, says the Trib une. Deputy Game and Fish Warden . Joe Nolf states that all hunters must .be armed with the necessary creden tials before they will be permitted to hunt wild game and unless the new law is complied with he will pros ecute all offenders. '' The open season for buck deer be gins August 15, and for does, Septem ber 1. On August 1 5 it shall be.1 law ful to kill grouse and prairie chickens, provided the huntsman is of course properly licensed. The charge of the hunter's license for persons residing in Oregon is $1. HINSY BESTS CASE Htu of Documentary Krldooeo "Iatrev daeed by OoTernmeat. The introduction of a mass of doc umentary evidence and identification of it oy the witnesses consumed all of Wednesday in the WiUiamson-Geeener-Biggs trial, at the conclusion of whicn Heney announced that the govern ment rested its case. The documents introduced consisted of entries of public land which the government contends were for the ben efit of the firm of Williamson & G ow ner, and relinquishments of claims filed just prior to the time the indict ments against Williamson, Gessner and Biggs were returned, and letters of Marion Biggs relative to entries or relinquishment of publio lands. The defense began its examination of wit nesses yesterday. . Hag. Talk. It was a huge task to undertake the cure of snoh a bad case of kidney dis ease as that of C. F.
