Mclntyre. 0. M. Pierce, former cashier of the Weston bank, is manager of an obser vation street car in Los Angeles. Mrs. M. W. Smith returned Friday evening from Walla Walla, where Mr. Smith has been under a physician's care. E. M. Akers of lone, Morrow county, visited his brother, Len Akers, in this city for several days, returning home yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Marquis, of Adams, were guests over Sunday of their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. George B. Marquis. Leader: Miss Margaret Goodfellow, a former teacher in the Normal, was re cently married to a Mr. Hall, and re sides in Seattle. The special meetings at the Methodut church will continue during the week and over the coming Sabbath. You are cordially invited to attend. y Mr. and Mrs. Alf Coppock, who have 'been down from their farm near Colfax, Wash., visiting relatives for the past week or two, left this morning for their home.' McGrew and family, who formerly resided in Weston but last year moved to the Willamette valley, are guests at the C. A. Brotherton home near town. ; - Two of Pendleton's teachers have re signed to take positions in the Portland public schools. Miss Iona Marsh, of Weston, has been employed to teach in the Pendleton school. Miss Frankie Estes is quite ill at the home of her sister, Mrs. G. H. Saling, in this city. Her mother, Mrs. John Estes, came up from Pendleton to be in attendance upon her. Mrs. J. E. Froome was very sick the past week, having contracted a severe cold. With prompt medical treatment on the part of her physician, Dr. Sharp, a case of pneumonia was averted. Leader: John Berlin has returned from Pendleton where he took treatment for paralysis and dropsy, and has gone out to his farm near Weston. His con dition shows but little improvement. Elsa Rosenzweig, teacher in the primary grade, is suffering this week with that most painful of afflictions, a felon on her finger. She still manages to attend to her school duties however. Bert Vaughan, who has been visiting his children in Weston, drove over with Mrs. E. Ridenour Saturday and spent the day with Athena friends. Sunday he returned to his home in Pine, Union county. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Barnett took their departure Friday for Portland, where they will remain, should the cli mate prove beneficial to Mr. Barnett's neaitn. in case it snouid not, ne may go on to California. Samuel D. Peterson, of Milton, has been admitted to the practice of law in Oregon upon presentation of a license issued by the state of North Carolina, and the recommendation of the chief justice of that state. The annual convention of the Sunday School association of Umatilla county will be held in Milton February 23 to March 4. Preparations are now being made for the event and the program will be announced in a few days. The Inland Mercantile company, com posed of J. J. Roulstone, F. H. Swisher, T. A. Lievallen, H. A. Richardson and U. H. Ferguson has been organized at Adams with a capital stock of $10,000 The company will do a general mer chandise business. . The members of the Methodist church gathered in the church parlor yesterday afternoon and surprised their pastor, Rev. Ed Baker and wife, by each ten dering to them a bounteous donation The afternoon was most pleasantly and profitably passed by those present. A rumor conies to the Press that the postoffice force will organize an orches tra. The instrumentation will be as follows: Postmaster Githens, cello; 1st assistant postmaster Page, flute; 2nd assistant postmaster Allen, drum; ac companiment, Edison's latest improved phonograph. John Thompson was in town from his stock ranch on the Umatilla, yesterday, trading with Athena merchants. PH.. E. Helm, clerk in the Athena Mercantile store, is laid up with a case of the mumps. Mrs. Helm, who is also employed in the store, is ill with la grip. Mrs. Ed Barrett received word that her father, Mr. Snyder, died at his home in Spokane last night. Mr. and Mrs. Barrett left for that city on this morn ing's train. At the council meeting last night Mayor Taylor appointed J. W. Smith and York Dell clerks, and G. W. Brad ley, Wm. TompkinB and S. L. Spencer judges for the city election. W. D. Shutt, of Pasco, was in the city Saturday and Sunday, a guest at the Rosenzweig home. Mr. Shutt is prosecuting attorney for Franklin coun ty, Wash., and also owns large landed interests in that rapidly advancing sec tion of the country. On Thursday evening February 23, Wild Horse Lodge No. 73, 1. O. O. F., will hold a grand public reception, the occasion being the opening of the new halLThe general public is invited. The committee on program, entertain ment, etc., has been appointed and is now at work. The program will be an nounced later. ly Rev. Geo. T. Ellis, who has been rnolding a series of meetings at the New Home Baptist church near Freewater, returned home Friday and reports a most successful meeting at that place, having baptized 12 converts. Mr. Ellis goes to Weston this week, where he will hold a series of meetings extending over ten days or two weeks. Married, at the home of the bride near Cove, Union county, Mr. Ed Miller and Miss Elida A. Stackland. Both parties are well known in Athena, the bride having conducted a successful photo graph business here for several months,' and the groom, who has often visited his brother, W. C. Miller of this city, has also made many friends here, who will join with the Press in extending hearty congratulations and well wishes. Mr. and Mrs. Miller will make their home on a farm near Cove.
