A NEW FEED PLANT TEOSINTE PBOVES TO BE DEOTJTH EESISTER. Stools in a Wonderful Manner, One Beed Sending Up ai Much as 100 Plants in a Season. v The farmers of Eastern Yakima valley have discovered a valuable forage plant which promises greater returns than any cultivated - crop tested. It is teosinte Experiments conducted by different mn show that the plant will produce at least 60 tons of green food per acre. It grows to the height of 10 to 12 feet and has two crops annually. The plant is well adapted to Western Washington, and will prove a money maker to dairy men and stock feeders. Under the irri gating farming it is a wonder in the pro duction of feed. Teosinte belongs to the corn family. It was introduced from the neb, river bottoms of South America. The stems contain about 10 Der cent suear and ars rnlmlmd bv all kinds of stock. Seed can not be grown in the northern states, In the south the cron is one of the most profitable that can be planted. Thn Louisiana exneriraent station has produced 50 tons of green feed per acre This is readily purchased by, dairymen for $2 a tpn, in the field. When a crop requiring no more laber than corn yields 8100 an acre in the field it is worth growing. The ereatest value of teosinte is its stooling qualities. One seed will pro duce from 50 to 100 plants in a season This can be cut with a mowing machine or harvester and fed green or put in the barn for winter. A Kentucky erower says that on his farm one seed produced 113 sprouts, Prof. Asa Gray, a well known agticul tural authority, states that . tbjs : plan 'possibly affords an opportunity for one to make millions of blades of grass where none of any account grew before.' He has reference to the dry lands, teosinte is a great drouth resister. as Three pounds of seed will plant an acre in teosinte. The soil should be good condition, and a rich loam to pro duce the best results. ; . - If planted in rows two feet apart, and the plants loft to stand a similur distance in the rows, it will give the best crops of forage. Cultivation is the sirtne as for corn When the first crop attains a height of about fo6r or five feet it may be cut and . the second crop left to crow. In the rich bottoms' of thn Puget Sound basin two crops ought to yield 60 tons or more of green feed per acre. Teosinte is a valuable hog feed. The green Btalto are devoured as quickly aw com. Cows eat it with a relish. The long green blades quickly cure and can be stored away in the barn or shed with out danger of spoiling. When the last crop is cut the remain ing young sprouts furnish - excellent pasture for hogs and cows. The plant ib an annual forage crop and requires practically the same treatment as other cultivated fodders. Seed can ba had at probably 75 cents per pound. ' To Whom It May Concern. WESTON Leader: George Taylor, a Weston mountain farmer who is interested in the rural telephone line, was engaged Satur day in working on improvements to the system when a ladder iell upon him. knocking bitn unconscious. No ill ef fects ' followed, however, and he was able to resume work on Monday. " Charles II. Taylor will a farmer be, having leased the Turner place on the foothills cast of Weston. Mr. Taylor hopes that the outdoor activities of farm life will be just the thing to restore hia health, which has suffered from con finement in the mercantile business. Mrs. Agnes Moore, aged 79 years, died Tuesday morning, March 22, 1904, at the home of her nephew, Allan Gar nett. after a long illness. Pneumonia was the immediate cause of death. Mrs Moore was a native of England, and came to America in 1889. In 189U sue moved to Weston, where she had since resided with her nephew. Extra posts will soon be placed in position along the Weston mountain telephone line for the purpose of sup porting another wire, the posts being too far apart at present. One wire will then be used for business comrounica tions and the other for the "rubbering" and gossip which the patrons, find interesting. Nick Taiteneer. an extensive reserva tion farmer near Adams, was in town this week, consulting Weston's real estate men, . Powers A Kidenour. Mr, Taitenger is preparing to dispose of his reservation interests and move to the Alberta country, where on a recent visit he purchased two sections of land at $5 per acre. Ground in the Weston neighborhood has received a more thorough soaking than ever known before in the memory of the oldest inhabitant. During the last freshet water ran off the ground so freely that Weston streets were nearly flooded. - Out - on the foothills, three miles from town, Dick Powers reports that water flows from the top of both his wells, and every squirrel hole is a spring. The other day he turned a rock over and a spring gushed forth from be neath it. It will be remembered that Moses smote a rock in the wilderness to provide water for the thirsty tribes of Isreal. Mr. Powers seems to have somewhat the advantage of this great man of old. MILTON Eagle: Miss Edith Perry has been granted a state diploma on grades re ceived at the last examination. D. E.
