But whether he was honestly endeavoring to serve his constituents or playing to the galleries matters little. What he has done amounts to nothing whatever. It is simply time wasted. Though it is not too late for him to do something practic able, and we would suggest that he de vote his energies to a practicable propo sition, something tangible, something that will be of actual benefit to the set tlers of Sherman county, who, by a de cision of the supreme court, in the cases of Wilcox vs. Eastern Oregon Land Co. and Messinger vs. Eastern Oregon Land Co , were deprived of their lands and improvements. While cupital in a town is u mighty good thing to have, provided it is used rightly, nevertheless push, energy and public spiritedneBS will do wonders to ward upbuilding a town even if capital is lacking. The following from the Newberg Graphic illustrates this point quite forcibly: "The lack of capital is not the great est misfortune that can befall a town McMinnville probably has five times the amount of actual money Newberg can boust of and yet in the race that is being made for active, energetic business New berg is throwing dust in the eyes of our neighbors every day in the week, as a comparison of the two towns will show It is said by residents of the county seat that too much of their money is kid awuy for the anticipated "rainy day," fur the best interests of the present gen oration while in Newberg every dollar is invested in some enterprise that gives somebody something to do. It is easy to see, that an abundance of dead cap ital m,ny be more of a hindrance in the way of an aspiring town than a partial lack of live capital." It is seldom if ever, in the history of thespian art, that one man attempts to entertain an audience in so classic a play as "Faust." However, the excep tion to the rule must be chronicled, in somuch as an Athena audience has wit nessed a new dramatisation of the play that embodies the flumes and imps of Hades, conjured by the satanic Mephis pheles for the benefit of the philosopher, Faust. In the'stundard play of Faust, Mephistopheles, while the leading char acter, at certain intervals wears the cloak of obscurity long enough to let otliereharacters speak their lines. In the reconstructed version as presented in Athena Saturday night, Mr. "Me phisto" was the whole showscenic effects not barred. He had to ie, for the rest of the cast was non est. The editorial columns of the Portland Oregonian have planted the Umatilla Indian rservation over in Morrow county. By short jerks and easy stages, it is presumed that the Portland paper contemplates having the reservation an nexed to the fair grouuda in ample time for the opeuing of the Lewis and Clark xpoMtioo. Capital ideal Appropriate ness or nothing, is evidently the cher ished idea of Portland's great daily in the matter of exhibits for the exposition. But there'll be something doing that's not down on the bills it the Oregonian staff" scoops in our reservation without "us country" fellows knowing it. They can have the Injuns for a spell but Umatilla county nedds the reserva tion land for wheat and corn raising purposes, , Fifteen thousand, seven hundred and fifty fruit trees, 11,000 of them prune trees, are being set out by the Blalock Fruit company on the big fruit farm at College Place. About 8,000 have been put in so far. The location is on the north side of Mill creek on the 620 acre ranch recently purchased from Thomas Lyons, of Walla Walla, and costing a fortune. It is said the entire farm will b turned into a hug fruit orchard as soon as it can be gotten in shape. Twenty-five thousand trees in all will be set out by the Blalock farm people this year, giving 60,000 trees on this one ranch, as the company has now 44,000 bearing trees of all varieties. Portland is after the meeting of the national grange next November, and, Judged by the way that city has secured the congresses of the cattlemen, miners and other organizations, it ought to have a comparatively easy time in landing the national grange. Ex-Congressman M. A. Moody serves notice on the Mitchell faction of the republican party that he still continues to be a representative man in the ranks of the party. Three counties are en rolled under his banner Wheeler, Sher man and Gilliam. COMING BVKNTS. April 9. Umatillacounty republican convention. ( . April 12. Umatilla county democrat ic convention.
