U communications should be addressed to l PRESS Athena, Oregon ATHENA, JANUARY J15, 1904 Victoria will be a long time explaining away her irfaction in connection, with the loss of the steamer Clallam and the drowning of 54 of her passengers and crew. The vessel was within 20 minutes of her Victoria dock when misfortune overtook her. She was seen to swing broadside to the storm and drift out of eight , on to her doom. The local agent was notified and he endeavored to get a local tug to go to her assistance, but failed, owing to the absence of the crews of the tug fleet, and no steamer had steam up. Then he telegraphed jjo Part ' Townsnd bvP '. itoiyoke and Sea Xiun, which found her, were dispatched. Victoria surely could have found a crew with which to man a tug when lives of passengers were storm endangered, Js it possible that the tug Ilolyoke could run 80 roilds from Port Townsend to Buccor the doomed vessel, before steam could be raised in Victoria vessels? It does toot look reasonable, on the face of , it; therefore, this excuse is a lame one, Later the Sea Lion, ' another tug, steamed over from Pprt .Townsend and assisted in the rescue of a few surviving passengers, but. no mention of a Vic toria boat being on the scene is made though it was hours after the Clallam was sighted by those on the Victoria water front, who noticed she was flying flags bf . distress. The disinterested manner ic which the seafaring people of Victojffa exploited when they permitted thja 'agent to call on Port Townsend for S2iwiaa -trana; thera before the world as atject cowards, unworthy the name of seafaring men. A pitiable effort was made to criticise the actions 'of the officers of the tug Ilolyoke, in not blading for Victoria after Bue got a line on the Clullam. The Ilolyoke hav ing no berth in Victoria would naturally prefer Port Townsend, in accordance with the natural competitive spirit ex isting, to say nothing of the milk livered treatment accorded the steamer by Victoria seamen. A novel course has recently been opened ia a training school of kinder garten teachers in an Eastern city. It is-called a course in home-making. Its prospectus recognizes the fact that the preparation for the most important in dustry in which womon can engage has always been more or less haphazard It a girl could make a loaf of bread and a cup of coffee, if she knew that beef .steak is bought by the pound and not by thd yard, and that windows should not be washed outside in freezing wea ther, she was too often thought to be equipped for housekeeping at least when the family was to consist of "just herself and her husband." The mis eries of the first year of marriage, with so meager a supply of knowledge and experience, are written , deep in the memories of many a husband and wife, tt is a good sign that a popular school has had the sense and, the courage to establish a department where girls over eighteen years old may study tho heuse intelligently its construction, its dec oration 'and furnishing; housekeeping with its expenses its accounts, its mar keting, its cooking and laundry work. . But two citizeus, save the members of Weston's new council, were present at its first meeting in 11)01, says the Lead er, In fact, public interest iu the work of the council seems to be woefully lacking except on. the street corners, where its doings are discussed aud crit icised with more or less dearth of knowledge. It should be remembered that the mayor aud council serve with out pay, and would doubtless feel a little wore eucouraged in doing the work of the public if the public gave evidence of more diswnuTVjj interest and apprecia tion. Citizens at not only cordially welcomed at council meeting . their preence is earnestly desired. There are no "star. -ghauiber" proceeding at the city hall, with a viow'il surreptitious they are honest mistakes; and criticism and advice offered on the streets are so much vapor unless based on knowledge of the council's work gained by pres ence at its sessions. - The reported assignment of C. B. Wade, cashier of the First National bank of Pendleton, to James II. Raley, whose liabilities are placed at 800,000 was a surprise to many of that gentle man's friends. No more conservative business man was believed to live than Mr. Wade, and his good advice and words of warning to those inclined to speculate have saved many from the threatening abyss of bankruptcy. His failure can be accounted for only through his ' unfortunate connection with Eastern Oregon mining properties. "His success in other business ventures created the envy .of competitors," says the Pilot Rock Record, "and those who knew of bis successful livestock and land ventures, were not idle in getting him interested in mines, and this no doubt was the beginning of the end." The catastrophe which cost nearly 600 lives at the Iroquois theatre at Chicago, brings to mind a similar calamity at Silver Lake, Oregon, which occurred at a Christmas entertainment a number of years ago, and which cost forty-three lives. Fire naturally excites any one, and if enough people are assembled at a place where the cry is given, it will sure- ireate a stampede that will cost a number of lives. Ilad the people who were in attendance at the Iroquois thea tre in Chicago not lost their wits, the death list would doubtless not have been so large. The Milton Eagle has set on foot a "boom" for tho division of Umatilla county with Milton as the center of at traction. Its argument is that Umatilla county is "too big and unweildy for comfort." There are undoubtedly a good many people in Umatilla county who will take issue with the Eagle. Times-Mountaineer. Well, we should smile. Not only "a good many will take issue," but, as it has been hereto fore, everybody but Milton's citizens and many of those also, will take issue. There was once a time when the sheep industry was the leading interest Eastern Oregon, and could dictate the policies and control the vote of this part of tho state.' But this is no longer true. The sheep business is about the third in importance in Eastern Oregon, and will no longer be the dominant influence it will be a less prominent factor in the future than it has been in the past In the Cosmopolitan Magazine Mr. Wells, 'the romancer, tells of a country whore there are wasps as big as barn owls. It not only cures colds and grip effectually and permanently, but prevents these diseases from resulting in pneumonia. It is also a certain cure for croup. Whooping cough is not dan gerous when this remedy is given. It contains no opium or other harmful sub stance and may be given as confidently to a baby as to an adult. It is also pleasant, to take. When all of these facts are taken into consideration it is not surprising that people in foreign lands as well as at homef esteem this remedy very highly and very few are willing to take any other after having once used it.
