The ( Record savs the wool sale there last week was a dismal failure. Less money was offered than the grower could have sold for prior to placing his wool in the warehouse. Had he sold when, the 1 buyers visited Wallowa ! " county he would liave saved warehouse charges and insurance which will now amount to over -$2 per ton. What the outcome will eventually be remains to be seen but it now looks as if the grower who refused to pool his wool and sold on the market, will be the one to pocket the most profits this year. Those in the pool may come out all right but from present indications the price of wool will have to come up quite a little if , they realize as much hb they could ' iiuve sold for individually, soverul duys liuce, and it now looks as if the pooling holi ness will be a thing of the pitat so fur as a majority of the Wallowa county wool growers ure concerned. , , ,( These tiro some of the ninety bix con ditions named in tho..cuntract undjsr which Piit.li it. to come .to tho (Juited Slates next winter: For GO concerts she will receive $5000 per concert, and one half tho gross receipts above $7,500; on the steamer Putti is to have 7 rooms for herself and husband and rooms fur her 7 servants, 21 dogs, an Angora gsat and 55 birds. For land travel special trains must bo engaged. At every perform ance the songstress must receive at least three floral pieces or laural wreaths. The cheapest seats must not be below 83. Putti selects her own hotel at the manager's cost and her reception room muet not be less than $50 per day. Her private cooks must have access to the hotel kitchen. The manager must also f .rnish two-horse carriages night and dny. The program must be three iiiimbers only, two songs and one dpor ii io part. Patti may sing more, but must , not be asked to do so. She Heroes to go anywhere in the United .ji.ites excopt New Orleans. The connection of the Philippines w 'ah the United States, with submarine c.ihlowill prove of inestimable value to t a i country as well as a great saving in the expense of sending official messages. During the Spanish-American war and the subsequent revolution in the islands u vast sum of money was expended by I hit country for cable dispatches, a con dition which would be greatly mini mised in the future as well as creating a much lower rate on commercial and ollleiul business in time of peace, says the Walla Walla Union. The feat ac complished by sending a message around the world in nine and one-half minutes . was a realization of the dreams and hopes of the past, but that is insignifi cant when the true value of such com munication is taken into consideration. Heretofore we hae had to cable to the Philippines and the Orient around the other direction, or through European sources. Now we go direct and inci dentally include Hawaii and Guam, our other Pacific possessions. " It is an obvious fact that the search for good, big, partialfy developed min ing properties requiring ( large capital has never been more earnest and per sistent than now. The men who hare made their money in mining realize its marvelous possibilities, and hence are willing to risk almost unlimited sums in backing their judgment on a mining proposition. It does not follow from this assertion that mining opera tors are plungers and indulge in spec tacular plays like the big bulls and bears of Wall street. It simply means , that experience and skill are developing a line of practical commercial experts in mining, who are able to measurably eliminate the element of uncertainty heretofore attaching to this class of investments, and to secure legitimate and eotistant dividends unuer giveD conditions.: The wonderful record of dividends from mining within the past decade is ample proof of this content Hon. ' - " r Over 60,000 claims have been filed for pensions on account of injuries sustain ed in our little war with Spain. It. is expected that by the end of the year the number of applicants for pensions will equal one-half the number of men en gaged in the war. Many of the appli cants did not go out of the United States. Only a small proportion of the soldiers were wounded, but - many suf fered from disease. Over 12,000 pension claims have already been allowed, and more than 18,000 have , been" rejected," leaving about 30,000 to be adjusted, and this number is rapidly increasing. , , I.. . Athena now has one of the best equip ped water systems in the Inland Em pire. Every portion of the town is now under fire protection, and a new hose cart and additional hose has been ad ded to the department. With two hose teams and a book and ladder company, Athena stands well prepared to battle with fire. . ; " ".; .''".''" The great local political fight in Walla Walla ended in about an even break.' Mayor Hunt was re-elected by a vote of 15 over Frank S. Dement.
