UMATILLA COUNTY IN PIECES Newsy Items of Interest From Our County Exchanges. , From the Weston Leader, Miss Joeie Wright, a Normal graduate of '95, leaves soon to take charge of the school at Tampa, an Eastern Washington town, R. Mr. Richmond, of Helix, who re cently boueht the Harve Williams plase near Weston; is preparing to build thereon a neat, six-room cot tage, from plans fafniehed by Geo. Williams. The local wheat market is quiet. No 6ales are reported except one car load, 777 bushels, to Hamilton & Rourke, at Downing. This wheat brought only 26 cents, being very smutty. A few day3 ago a man who was em ployed about Fletcher's mill tried to remove a shaving from near the cylinder, and the hand was drawn against the blades, the fingers be ne filinnod off in nn 1nRf.fl.nt. Mountain farmers and Weston people will regret the action of the county court now in sersion, in denying the petition for the im provement ofcthe county road lead ing up the foothills east of town Commissioner Adams has v.'sited the road and reported to the court that it is already in good condition However, a large number of people who travel over the road have an opinion different from that of Mr. Adftmn. r ' i nn iv i j. . . iv una r.nnnpn J mi - t ' r n t i lor the new school year under the. most encouraging auspices. The .... . - attendance on the first dav num bered eighty, a large increase over any former record, and eighty-five pupils have so iar been enrolled. There will be a big addition to this number, as many old students have.not come in, and there are several new pupils in the city who aro not yet enrolled. it," said Jay Baling to a Leader man, referring to a queer incident at his mountain farm, v'but it3 a fact nevertheless. Coyotes are numerous and impudent up my way, and I actually saw one of them savagely attack a full-grown hog at 75 yards from the house. The hog, which will weigh at least 150 pounds, ran squealing for home, bloody with wounds inflicted by the coyote. The cowardly coyotes are never supposed to attack any animal of good size, but they hnvo been killing off my shotes of dif ferent sizes, and doubtless the bra vest of their number finally mus tered courage to fight an adult hog." From tho Mint Itock Record, v' Mr. Weston and Bob Alby came in this week from a trin throueh Efistfim OrAOYin rtnrl Tflnlirv vhsrs they had gone in search of wintei range. Smith's place, which measured 11 feet. This knocks the Johnson stalk into a cocked hat. Some time ago we received a let ter from Portland addressed . to Pilot Rock, which had been mailed at that place and returned to writ er marked, "no such postoflice in state named." Considering that Pilot Rock is nearly as old as Port land, it is our opinion that Uncle Sam's servants at the latter place ought to post up a little. . From tho Milton MUtonhm.) Thn Wnl butchers are handling this business, ana are supplying as good a quali ty of pork stuff as former! v ramn in from the famous centers of Chi cago, Kansas City or Omaha.
