News Blue Mountain Eagle O UT OF THE P AST Dec. 20, 1917 Grant County Journal 98 years ago Kight Hear From Walter Kight is a member of the aviation corps and is in train- ing in New Jersey. His father re- ceived the following letter from him this week: December 11, 1917 Dear dad: I am on guard duty today and am wondering what kind of weather you are having there. It is blowing about 40 miles per hour here, with dust and snow. I am lucky, though, as my post is around the garage and I only walked four hours during the night, and it was warm. To keep my mind occupied and have something to do, I counted nine- teen cars going to the camp and heard four different trains pass. Was talking to a hospital corps man who was in the guard house for 30 days for going absent 12 days and to another who over- VWD\HGKLVSDVVDQGJRWD¿QH It makes me sore to think that the (Germans) got my old friend, Harry Watkins, and I sure wish that we would hurry up and leave for France be- cause I would like to meet the (Germans) on business mat- ters. Those knitted things are sure warm and I use them every time I go on guard, which is about once a week. I am insured by the gov- ernment for four thousand dol- lars until the 15th of February, so don’t need to take the other now. Must close as the sergeant of the guard will be after me. Eagle file photo IDEAS PAY — Alfred Patzer, maintenance worker for the Malheur National Forest road department, recently received a cash prize of $25 for an employee suggestion. Patzer developed a masonite chain saw guard to provide safe transportation of chain saws to and from the job. Rex Resler, supervisor, presented the award to Patzer Friday. The restaurant was orig- inally built by Fred and Easter Lang for use as an A & W fast food restaurant. Mountain Side currently is closed awaiting removal of old equipment. Prairie City offered a heartfelt and encouraging message. Loved ones’ names and photos were projected on the wall above, while Ken and Linda Kowing recited the list and Jessie Saul and Shannon Winegar lit candles for each one. Sgt. Maj. William Wyllie of the Oregon National Guard Land Component Command read names on the list of lo- cal veterans who have died. Members of American Le- gion Post 77 performed a VROHPQ ÀDJ IROGLQJ FHUHPR- ny while Ed Heiple played “Taps” on trumpet. Recorded hymns performed by Jamie Cernazanu were played, and closing out the service, hospice nurse Richard Smarr read a poem, “I Forgot to Say,” by Adam Kowing, and offered the closing prayer.
