Todd Hueckman Contracting earned the award for his work on a roughly 70-acre harvest intend- ed primarily to halt the spread of dwarf mistletoe onto the land- owners’ remaining acres. Hueckman’s techniques us- ing equipment to decrease the impact on the land, like using the boom of his tracked equip- ment as a pivot rather than just skidding on the tracks to turn, show his ongoing commit- ment to protecting the land. Mr. Hueckman also found a way to make the harvest work, despite the nearest mill being over two hours away. The award was one of several announced earlier this month by the Oregon Board of For- estry, which established the Operator of the Year program to recognize contractors who consistently meet or exceed the JOHN DAY – Ellis Tracy Unit 77 of the American Legion Auxiliary reports several items from the group’s Jan. 17 meeting. The Auxiliary received a thank you letter from the Port- land Veterans Hospital noting that Unit 77 contributed more than any other unit in Oregon in the latest holiday collection drive for veterans. According to Ruth Harris, the group also pro- vided Christmas gift bags for 12 veterans in local care facilities. The Auxiliary is planning a “sweetheart observance” set for Monday, Feb. 16, at the Amer- ican Legion Hall in John Day. More details will follow. The Americanism essay pro- gram and Girls State activities were also discussed at the meeting. Harris added that names of current, active duty personnel are needed for the Auxiliary’s outreach program. For more in- formation, call Jessie Lewis at 541-575-1047 or Harris at 541- 575-0076. JOHN DAY – With a strong turnout earlier this month, organizers are add- ing two more dates to the schedule of ski bus trips to Anthony Lakes Ski Resort from Grant County. Greg Whipple said the Saturday, Jan. 10, trip drew 51 students and adults to enjoy skiing, snowboarding and les- sons; another busload will head to the mountain this Saturday. The ski bus is spon- sored by John Day/Canyon City Parks and Recreation District and Community Counseling Solutions. Organizers had set just the two dates, Jan. 10 and 24, for the season but promised to add more if enough skiers turned out. Noting a significant increase in participation over past years, they an- nounced two new dates this week: Jan. 31 and Feb. 14. The bus is open to stu- dents, their families and interested adults. Stu- dents below seventh grade must be accompanied by a guardian. The bus leaves the Grant Union parking lot at 6:30 a.m. and returns about 8 p.m. The program includes discount packages for lifts, lessons and rentals. Adults can still take ad- vantage of the discounts, whether they ride the bus or drive on their own. Registration forms are available at the high schools, and from Parks and Rec. on jdccparksan- drec.weebly.com.
