FEEDING THE WORLD AGAIN THIS YEAR STILL A NATIONAL DUTY Secretary of Agriculture Houston, in Special Article to The Times-Herald, Points Out The Necessity of Big Crops and Increase of Live Stock Products CO-OPERATION WITH FARM BUREAUS IMPORTANT 11V I). F. HOUSTON, I iiIUm! States Secretary of tho Arl- rultuiv. ( Written Specially for The Tlmes- Herulil.) During tlio period hIih-o we enter i I the war, t ho farmers of tlie nation liavo responded mnrrnlflcently to the i ppeali tor IncfMMd production and all the people have compiled with iho urgent ra$Mati Cor -fuller con servation. During this pant fall season, our farmers planted an Increased wheat acreage and a largo acreage in rye. It Is too early now to make de tailed suggestions for the spring planting season. We do not know how the fall grains will come throgh the winter and we are not now ablo to fore cast the demands and the conditions which will prevail after the first of th year. This department, the agricultural j colleges, and other organizations will ' . ontiuue to give definite thought to ;ill the problems, and, at the proper : time, will lay the situation beforo you. The Two HIk Job-, Of The Hour. . Two thing! MOn to he clear: One is that, for a considerable i od, the world will haw Md par ticularly of a larger supply than nor- j mal of live Hock, and especially of ' fats. We should not fall, therefore. I to adopt every feasible means of economically Increasing our -Jive ' stock products. As a part or our program, wo should give duo thought to the secur ing of an adeadequate Supply of feedstuffs and to the eradication and control of all forms of animal jm I jib state departments of agriculture, and farmers' associations, but we should especially stengthen the local phlnlum of the flower gardens. It Is National Fores! which, for the last1 I years has CNused an average annual loss of; cattle valued at $4!!i'., will bo critiibed nexi leaftofl by the I'ure I Rervlce nt an estimated of MOO. ' The value of cattle lost on thA National Forests of the United States from tall larkspur poisoning during iho wast yoar was ?J25,0') representing 2500 head of cattlo. During the previous year losses were reduced I1B.8B0, by the grubbing out of larkspur from 380 acres. The average cost or eradication Is about one-half the value of the average annual loss. Since the lose Is con tinuous from year to year unless the poisonous plante are eradicated, It assumes an enormous value in a few years. Tall larkspur Is a plant similar In appearance to the larkspur or del la nn burenus and other organisa tions which support so effectively the extension forces and assist them in their activities.
