S. Department of Agriculture. Reports In the possession of Mm Department show that where lulle senilis form all or a part of the pig's diet, the gains cost considerably less than the gains made by their grain fed competitors, especially under pros ent conditions. Approximately 16 to 20 pounds qf garbage are required a day for rattening a hog of 126 to 200 pounds. It has been estimated that 4 tons of garbage are required to grow a pig to 200 pounds, the feeding per iod extending from 10 to 12 month . In the heat of a Washington July no wonder the Senate was anxious for a recess. Their slogan for the last two or three days of the session wa probably "Adjourn or burs." FOR IIORHEH Opportunity for brooders of heavy draft horses In Oregon, and particu larly in tho Willamette Valley Is groat, believes Wayne Dlnsmoro of ClihiiKo, koi rotary of the Peroheron Society of America, who makes a study of horse conditions In the state and who was a visitor at the Oregon Agricultural College. "There is no question but that there will be a heavy advance in prices of heavy horses," said Mr. Dlnsmore. "My prediction Is that grade mares weighing 1,800 pounds or more will bring $500 each within five years. Geldings selling at 3i)0 In Chicago, are bringing $1,000 In Great Brltian. More than 1,000 Per- I cheron horses havo boon shipped from this country to Canada In the last 19 months- -611 In the last sev en mouths. "There Is a demand for heavy draft animals whlt.ji will Increase. Breeding stock will command par llcularly high prices. The Willam ette Valley should be in a position to supply this want. My Impression Is that it Is an admirable country for the breeding of high class livestock. The pastures and grain crops are ad equate and the grazing season is long and mild." Universal Garage Co. h .sj Fresh Beef Travels on a Rapid Schedule Fresh beef for domestic mar kets goes from stockyards to retail stores within a period of about two weeks. Although chilled, this meat is not frozen; hence it cannot be stored for a rise in price. A steer is dressed usually within twenty-four hours after purchase by the packer. The beef is held in a cooler at the packing house, at a temperature a little above freezing, for about three days. It is then loaded into a refrig erator car where a similar tem perature is maintained, and is in transit to market on an aver age of about six days. Upon arrival at the branch distributing house, it is unloaded into a "cooler", and placed on sale. Swift & Company requires all beef to be sold during the week of arrival, and the average of sales is within five days. Any delay along the above journey means deterioration in the meat and loss to the packer. Swift & Company, U. S. A.
